Default Australian Open SBR Points Tournament

Anyone have an interest in doing one? I know SBR isn't set up to do one through their contest links, but I'd be happy to help spearhead one that we can do specifically in the tennis forum. If we have enough people interested, we can start working on a format. Bring it.

    Id be down for one..
Not sure how to do one though...?
You could do it all by spreads only and use one site say 5 dimes?
Or all moneylines, and offer big bonus points to the upsets..
    Or a combo spread O/U...

I have several ideas. One would be doing it NCAA basketball style by filling out brackets and getting points for each correct pick based on seeds, etc. Others would involve using totals, moneylines, etc.

Bump for more interest. Remember this sucker kicks off Monday, January 18th. Draws will be out on Friday. Thinking maybe a 25 point entry fee would be easy for everyone. Thoughts?

As far as format, here's one for discussion. I would propose that we do a NCAA basketball bracket style pick where you pick your winners from match #1 to the championship. We can do ATP & WTA if wanted although due to sheer volume of matches, I would suggest just ATP. You'd get a certain number of points per correct pick, higher points for correctly picking upsets, etc.

And then to make it interesting the whole way through, we could then also add in starting in the 4th round or quarterfinals where you can pick the actual match-ups each round thru to the end for more points. Or stick strictly with the brackets from beginning to the end depending on what people like. I think the bracket style would be unique and probably more fun for both "experts" and "novices" at tennis.

I like both ideas because most people will have a lot of wrong picks by the quaterfinals.

Yes. There would be an entry fee to take part in the tournament. I was thinking 20 or 25 and the payouts would be determined based on the number of people we get entered. When I have some more time this afternoon, I will make a list of people in this thread who said they were in and we'll get something organized here soon.

Here's a proposed scoring formula I've schemed up, please provide input and suggestions!

Australian Open Bracket Contest for SBR Points
    * Entry Fee: 25 Points (Payout depends on # of entries)
    * You pick the entire ATP (Men's) bracket for the Open from the first match to the championship before the tournament starts. Bracket will be out on Friday I believe.

    SCORING
1st Round (128): 2 points for each correct pick. Correct Upset Pick of Seeded Player, 75 points.
2nd Round (64): 4 points for each correct pick. Correct Upset Pick of Seeded Player, 50 points.
3rd Round (32): 8 points for each correct pick. Correct Upset Pick of Seeded Player, 25 points.
4th Round (16): 16 points for each correct pick. Correct Upset Pick of Seeded Player, 25 points.
Quarterfinals (8): 32 points for each correct pick. Correct Upset Pick of a Seeded Player, 10 points.
Semifinals (4): 64 points for each correct pick. Correct Upset Pick of a Seeded Player, 10 points.
Final (2): 128 points for a correct pick. Correct Upset Pick of a Seeded Player, 10 points.

**When two seeded players meet, an "upset" would occur when a lower seed beats the higher seed. Example being the #13 beating the #6 seed, etc.

    OTHER SUGGESTIONS:
*Double your total points for an entire round (except the Final) if you have a perfect record for that round.
*100 bonus points for correctly picking all four semifinalists
*200 bonus points for correctly picking the winner

That's an outline I came up with. Again please tell me what you like and don't like and add your own suggestions so we can craft something everyone will like. Again for this contest, this will consist of just filling out the entire bracket before the first match begins. There will not be any lines used to determine anything in this. It's a straight pick 'em style bracket contest.

To explain my points for the "upset" picks, I went from a high bonus of points for picking early upsets (harder to predict) to lower bonus points in the later rounds when they are less likely. Hope that makes sense.

Great Eagles, and thanks for organizing this. I'm not particularly keen on the emphasis placed upon upsets (especially as it applies to seeded players). I would prefer a straight bracket challenge but will happily go along with whatever the format is as long as rules are fairly administered and clearly explained (which they are here).

Also, there should be a tie break question, total games in the final, total time of the final or something.

Oh yeah that's right, I said "keen."

Good point about a tie break. I'm fine with no bonus on upsets if that's what everyone wants, just something that had occurred to me as something I liked in some NCAA basketball contests I had done where upsets got you more points.

if we were to get bonus points for upsets, I would decrease the amount starting at 50 for the 1st round, but I would prefer a straight bracket as well.
