Pick #1: King -112
Get your Rolaids ready for women's tennis! I give King the advantage here as she's played three qualifying matches on the surface this week. Her first serve has been the key and will be again today. She holds a 2-0 head-2-head lead on Zakopalova, but those matches were three years ago or more. Zakapalova is the more accomplished returner of the two I think, but she's also transitioning back to the hard court from clay last week which should give King a small edge. Enough for me to be stupid and take her!

Pick #2: Kirilenko -119
4-0 head-2-head for the Russian and she sports a hefty 10-4 record against lefties, 9-1 in her last 10 against southpaws. She hadn't done a damn thing this year until winning in Round 1 against a shotty Makarova, but I'm gonna guess her comfort level with Safarova + Safarova sometimes getting the yips on serve could prove to be the damage point today. Plus the price is easy either way.

Hard for me to back someone who has lost 7 of their last 10 hard court matches and had not had any hard court form to speak of in 2009 in Szavay. She remains much more comfortable on clay as evidenced by her success in Acapulco. King for her part appears very comfortable in Monterrey with a 6-1 record here in two years. She's had four matches on the surface and her serve has been steady this week. That as usual is the key component to her matches & women's matches in general. If King can keep a productive 1st & 2nd serve as she has for most of this tournament, she has a legit shot to knock off Szavay today. Even more so if the Hungarian's serve hits the doublf fault yips as it has a times on the hard stuff.

Li is a clever hard court player and she hasn't had much trouble in her two matches here. Still, at the price, I think Safarova is the bet for me. Lucie has pounded out a heavy serve this week that has destroyed her opponents. The serve is something that has hounded her in the past, but right now it appears to be clicking. Safarova was whipping Kirlenko in Round 2 before she retired. Even if Kirilenko is not in form, dominating someone who was 4-0 against you before that should continue her confidence boost. If Safarova can maintain that level of serve on both 1st & 2nd chances today, she has a worthwhile shot at knocking off Li.

Better serve this week, while Bartoli continues to struggle on her 2nd serve and is giving out far too many break opportunities. Zheng should have the game to make her pay if she plays anything like she has in her other three matches here in Mexico.
