Hi, i'm fairly new to this, and i'm located in the US. I tried to cash a check from Bookmaker at the bank written on the check. It was all fine and dandy until she asked about where the check was coming from. I was like i dunno. She then asked if it came through a courier. I said yes. She then had to dig "deeper" because she thinks its one of those cheque scams that people get in the mail. Anyways, she was trying to contact the signee of the check, and was unable to because she was in the UK. They gave me the check back and said they will call me back if they contact her, or for me to bring it back because its a bogus check. My question is what should i have said to maybe not put up the red flag to them so they would just cash it? Not sure if i'm the first one that this happened to, but it sucks, and i would like to have my money.

i have another dumb question. they already took my thumb print, and marked all over this shit. by stamping their dumb shit on my check. i was wondering should i ask for another one from bookmaker or should it be ok to deposit at another atm? sorry and thanks for all your help skivchef

my buddy called his book and told them the problem. they stopped payment on the check and sent him a new one. this bullshit will probably take a month to solve.

just called my bookie. they said they need a receipt from the bank saying why they can't cash the check, and to send it back by courier. so i guess i have to go back up there and ask for a receipt.

If I were you I would take it to the bank and make it 100% clear you know where it came from(just say from a ebay order you forgot you sold) and claim full responsibility for it. Long story short people have been sending out checks and then asking the people who cash them to send back a certain percentage of the money. If you deposit the check in your account it might take a couple days but it should clear.

You can't do this. You can't deposit at an ATM if you don't have an account at that bank. If you don't have a bank account then you should open one, then deposit via ATM.

u can deposit a check at any atm if u have a bank acct. the bank u deposit it at will cash the check and electronically transfer your funds to your bank. u need to use ur atm card of course.

You don't ever want to take your check to the bank it's written on and cash it. That causes problems, as you now know. Just deposit it in your bank and wait for it to clear if they put a hold on it. That way you don't have any problems. If you have a lot of checks from gaming, then you have to lie as low as possible.

thanks guys for all your help. yep i definitely learned that dont cash the check at the bank on the check. well, good news is i know a teller in town, that my dumbass should have went to in the first place, is gonna help me cash the check first thing tomorrow morning.

Perhaps I've run good with checks, but in my many years of doing this, I've deposited hundreds of checks from well over a dozen offshores and only had one problem ever... which turned out to be MY BANK's fault.

if u deposit a check always use the atm because this way u dont have to deal with any teller.never had a problem with any checks cause i always use the atm.its quicker and never had a problem

Did you ask for any cash, they'll usually give you a hassle if the check appears to be foreign. If you just deposit it, they normally just run it through and see what happens. The check is either going to clear or not within two weeks.

UPDATE:

Yesterday I was able to cash my check at another branch, but the same bank. They didn't cash it because they think I was uncertain of where the money was coming from. My friend couldn't figure out why they didn't cash it in the first place because there were no red flags on the account and there was sufficient funds in it. We then we came up with a story that i had a buyer for a laptop in the UK. That used the merchant that was on the check. Good news is I got my money. My last 2 times I deposited the check in the atm. Next time it's going in the atm .
