I disputed $3,000 on a CC charge to a costa rican sportsbook. this was 2 yrs ago. now they have emailed me saying that they are about to send me to collections and this will hurt my credit score. can this be possible? im not worried about a collector, but i dont want my credit score to be damaged. can a foreign country affect my USA credit score?? i would think not and think they are bluffing....what do you guys think and anyone have any experience with this? tks!

Jowen, first off, why chargeback, ur not responsible enough to gamble? Then why gamble at all ??

Theres some type of collectors that Im aware of that can try to get the money back for the sportsbook, however, damaging your credit score I dont believe is an option.

there is more to this story than i care to share, but trust me i have plenty of legitimate reasons why i disputed the charge. all i can say is that they were dishonest with me.

I had a dispute with a guy in Tanzania (business) and he hired a US collection company. I obviously disputed the debt but, the agency was still able to report it to all 3 credit agencies. It stayed on my report for 7 years. This is not general pratice with collection agencies but it certainly can happen. My suggestion is to call there bluff and see if they actually hire one. Then you can cross that bridge when you come to it. Tell the agency it was for illegal gambling et. That might help. Anyway, to sum it up I would say about a 5% chance that this actually goes as far to end up on your credit report.

Anyone can report anything to the credit agencies.

You can get if off though, it may be a pain in the ass, but you can do it. PM me if you need help with that.

If you receive a notice from a collection company, send them a letter telling them you dispute the debt. If you fail to do this, they can report you.

Another point - in the same letter, tell the collection company not to call you.

Yeah i have a lot of school loans and i get calls from that bitch sallie mae even after i have just made a payment sometimes.. if you write to them and tell them they can not call you .. they have to do this.. and if they do call you start off the convo like this

If a collection company calls you after receiving written notice not to call you, it's a violation of the fair debt collection act. It's pretty much a slam-dunk deal to sue them in small claims. I don't remember what the statutory damages are... $500 or $1000.

Justin has it (although it is the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act). The statutory damages are $1000. If you notify them not to call you they cannot for a statutory period of time. Also, they may not indicate to others (perhaps a spouse) that the purpose of communication is for collection of a debt. Finally, my favorite is that they may not call at an "unreasonable time" which is per-se before 8am and after 8pm but you can tell them for your purposes what is reasonable.

that is correct.. if you record it.. its pretty much free money...

they usually call a day or two after you send the written notice.. so for like 2 days i used this trick and it helped

I'm not sure but a couple weeks ago I had a tout over the phone say he was going to notify collections because he thought I owed him $200 for a pick over the phone that I never agreed to pay.

I don't use touts but I have them calling me every day trying to sell me picks. And for the girls in my avatar, bones are for dogs my man. Big girls keep you warm and the winter and give shade in the summer.
