Default The Marlins

Are they this good or are the Nats just this bad?

Alot of posters on the Marlins today, and this win is particularly sweet because of the way it happened.

Congrats, Marlins backers!

As a longtime Marlins fan I can shed some light on the team.

First and foremost, they historically get little exposure from national media because they are a very small market team. Also, baseball fans seem to be under the impression that the Marlins get rid of their big name players and get nothing back.

Wrong.

For every Josh Beckett and Miguel Cabrera they lose, they gain a Hanley Ramirez and a Cameron Maybin.

Is it likely they will win the NL East? No. But I put $50 to win $2000 on them to win the NLCS because it's possible. No way that team should be 40-1 to win the NLCS. I'll take them all night long like Lionel Ritchie at that price.

Their second best hitter (Josh Willingham) has been on the DL for 2 weeks and they are still scoring runs. Their bullpen is lights out and they are missing 2 key starters in Anibal Sanchez (who threw a no-no) and Josh Johnson.

They just signed Ramirez to a 70 million dollar deal and if Cameron Maybin can be the player he is capable of in CF, this team will be a playoff contender in 2009 if not this year.

Scott Olsen at +114 against the Nats was a fukin joke and I was ALL over that price.

I was happy for the nice comeback win, especially since it ended up being my only win out of 4.

The Marlins are taking advantage of a weak division. Plus, I think they're trying prove a point with each victory - a big payroll doesn't guarantee a quality team.

It's crazy to think that A-Rod makes more than the entire Marlins roster.

Plus, they have to prove that they're a worthy investment for that new stadium proposal.

The Marlins are talented, but I don't think they are going to win anything. Hendrickson is pitching way over his head. And their pitching staff in general has no top of the rotation guys. Scott Olsen might have figured it out, but other than him there is nothing as far as pitching.

I think they have a shot - Atlanta, Washington, and the Phillies aren't pitching that much better.

The great thing about the Marlins is that they play as a team. There's no franchise player, some multi-millionaire hotshot asshole trying to steal the show. They're all in it together. Team chemistry goes a long way (in any sport).

First, Hanley Ramirez is a franchise player.

Second, all the other teams aren't pitching, but all the other teams have pitchers with track records. The marlins have the least pitching in the division. We don't know if Olsen is a mirage, and Hendrickson is not good enough to keep this up.

Third, they might be in it together, but I don't really think that matters in baseball. The more talented team will win in almost every situation in the long run.

Not true. Look at the Detroit Tigers. They're an extremely talented team, but they're not winning. Look at the NY Yankees - they're an extremely talented team, but they're not winning. The Angels are a great team, but Oakland's right there with them in the AL West division. Seattle's a great team, but they're not winning.

Baltimore, Tampa Bay, Florida, & Oakland - none of these teams have great depth or exceptional talent (from top to bottom), but they all have great team chemistry. These guys live to play and their win/loss records reflect the success of that drive.

Maybe not Florida, but I think that Tampa Bay is the real deal. I've been talking up Tampa Bay since preseason.

First, the Yankees pitching is horrible. I you cannot count on rookie starters to be good their first year. Pettitte and Mussina are back end guys, and Hughes/Kennedy are rookies.

Second, Detroits pitching is just as bad. Verlander is good, but Bonderman/Willis/Rodgers/Robertson are all 3/4 starters at best, and are pitching well below that now.

Third, the Angels had their best two pitchers injured before the season started. They are better than the A's.

The teams you are stating all have guys playing over their head. I don't think any of those teams are going to compete for a division championship, or a playoff berth. The key point is the long run, and a team with a bunch of guys performing over their heads has something to do with streak, but nothing to do with chemistry.

Hanley's the best posiion player, Lincecum's the best pitcher (followed by Volquez with Cincy)..

lincecum is not the top pitcher, and volquez aint in the top 30

and i live in sf and watch lincecum every time
he is good, top 15 maybe, but there are some good ones, and volquez needs more than one good month to prove it
