Twelve months
ago, Colchester caused the biggest sensation on the opening day of the
Football League season by smashing seven goals past Norwich at Carrow

"What
I would say to the fans is please come. It's the first game of the
season at The Park, which is a rarity these days. Come and see your
team and your pitch."

His New Strikers

"Things are a little different
to last year with lots of strikers fully fit but the problem has been
centre-halves this year. It is funny how things go in cycles but as for
the striker situation it is always good to have more than you need as
you normally use 3 or 4 per game so by definition you need more than
that for the course of a season.

"We've tried to stock the team
with the goalscoring type of striker and that has been top of our list
of recruitment criteria. Time will tell how they do but at the moment
they have settled in quite well."



The Goalkeeping Situation

"Paul has got the goalkeeping
jersey, he deserves it for performing so well during the last quarter
of the season. Artur is a very young talented and hungry goalkeeper, I
don't think it will be too long before he is pushing Paul.

"Then they have a fight on for
that position. But it is Paul's to lose and Artur's job to make himself
as selectable as possible. I am very happy with that competition at
present.
The Pitch

"The
pitch is flat, I don't think it has settled down yet and it will keep
getting better. It's a new pitch and it's a naturally changing facility
because it's growing grass and affected by the weather. We are hoping
it will be a big plus for us this year.

I
think we will get the difference from it in the middle of the season,
rather than at this time of the year. It's incredibly healthy and over
time it will settle down. It is a big step forward for the club and big
progress. It is a very very flat pitch which is unusual here at The
Park."

Colchester's New Manager

"John was there last year as
Assistant Manager and he has had a long career in the game with a lot
of games of football as a manager. There are quite a few players in our
team who have played under John including myself and John has a certain
way of performing.


"It isn't a shock to the system
like sacking a manager in the middle of a season and a new one coming
in as John's been there for a whole season and the players know him. He
has taken over a well drilled team."
