Default Book pays out on Lampard goal

Wow - this is pretty awesome. Congrats to any of you who placed the bet!!

Bookmaker William Hill said it WOULD pay out to their customers who bet on Frank Lampard scoring against Germany.

Spokesman Graham Sharpe said: "Even Sepp Blatter knows Lampard scored so we have already begun paying out to punters who backed him to do so at odds of 10/3. It will cost us a six figure sum."

I was thinking that there are two other books that I know that do this kind of thing from time to time and PP is probably one of them! I think the other one is an Aussie book.

It's great of them to do this considering they obviously didn't have to. Things like this make me smile.

Remember they paid out the Golf one with Tiger Woods. Paddy Power is much bigger than you would think. They are one of the biggest.

    Yes - I remember that!!

And that just reminded me that IASbet is the other one. They refunded all bets on Mickelson to win a tournament because he announced a day or two before it was to start that he was taking a break from golf due to his wife's breast cancer. And also when Schumacher was supposed to return to Formula 1 but cancelled because of his neck injury. They've also done it for tries that were disallowed in rugby and bad calls in cricket.

Yeah. I wonder what they're rated here. And Paddy Power as well.

I really need to pay attention to the ratings more than I do.

I sure hope they pay "no" as well. Pinny pays "no" only for sure. Bookmaking isn't charity.

I'm pretty sure it was one of those pick the player(s) you think will score kind of bets, so it wouldn't involve yes or no.

probably not a ton of action on it and secondly uk books have 40x the money USA books have.

It's just a marketing stunt. These UK books love to plaster these things all over the tabloids. Just hides how awful their odds are, they take an insane amount of juice on some markets.

Nice thing to do - but seems like they are setting a dangerous precedent with all the bad calls in major sports

Would they pay bettors that had:

England Goals under 1 or even 1.5 ????

What about England PK for 1st half

True, WillHill only offers 'player to score' lines.

Classy thing to do. It'll cost them for sure, but they get a lot of good publicity for it in return.

Well, the spokesman said it would cost them over six figures so it's a fairly decent amount. It's obviously not going to cripple them but considering it was an England match being bet at a UK book, you can only guess how much action they had on the match.

But yeah, as others have said, receiving publicity for this would obviously be a huge motivating factor but if I had made the bet, I wouldn't care why they did it. I'd just be happy that I'd made the bet at a UK book considering they didn't do this for the USA 'non-goal' for example. It's just nice to know that once in a blue moon gamblers can have things go their way after we get screwed over so many times by ref/ump mistakes.

    Good Info Shari

six figures is a lot for a usa based book, UK based its a decent amount but like you said not a big chunk.
