Your pick will be graded at: 48 betEDEXPERT: Steve MerrilTITLE: NFC Top Total – Packers/CardinalsREASON FOR PICK:
Green Bay absolutely dominated last week’s game as the Packers won 33-7 after they out-yarded Arizona 345-187. But the Cardinals took a cautious approach to that game in order to rest up and get ready for today’s game. Kurt Warner only played one quarter as did the majority of the Cardinals’ starters. So disregard the 7 points scored by Arizona as that was done while their backups were getting some work in.

The Packers offense maintained their momentum with their 33 point output last week. They’ve now scored 21 points or more in all but one game this season, and no defense has proven they can stop this potent offense. Their passing game behind quarterback Aaron Rodgers is simply fantastic. Rodgers completes 64.7% of his passes while averaging 8.2 yards per pass attempt (versus teams that allow 6.7 yppa). He’ll be facing a Cardinals’ secondary that is allowing 63.1% completions on 6.8 yards per pass attempt at home (versus teams that average 6.3 yppa).

Arizona’s starting offense will be on the field today, and they will be throwing the ball all over the field as usual. The Cardinals have no running game whatsoever (93 yards per game), so if they want to keep pace with the explosive Green Bay offense, they have to throw the ball all game long. Kurt Warner is completing 66.3% of his passes while averaging 7.3 yards per pass attempt, and he’ll be a formidable opponent for Green Bay’s secondary this afternoon.

You have to go all the way back to November 1st to find a team on the Packers’ schedule that can throw the ball like Arizona. That game was against Brett Favre and the Vikings and the Packers allowed 38 points and 244 passing yards. Arizona has a similar deep passing game so the results could resemble that game today. A much weaker passing attack in Pittsburgh put-up 37 points and a whopping 472 passing yards just three weeks ago on the Packers which shows they are vulnerable to big plays in the passing game.

Both teams are battling nagging injuries to key personnel in their secondary, and being less than 100% definitely gives the edge to the opposing offenses. Both teams love to throw the football, and put the game on the shoulder of their veteran quarterbacks. This game has all the makings of a high-scoring shootout as both teams will generate points with relative ease.
