2.5-Unit Play. Take #743 Appalachian State (+14.5) over Dayton (8 p.m., Monday, Dec. 21)
Three of Dayton’s top four players could be out tonight and I’m not sure they are going to have enough firepower to get the job done this evening. This is a talented Appalachian State team, good enough to beat Wofford on the road by one point. That tells me that they are on the same level as the Terriers, and if Wofford was catching this many points I would bang on them too. Appalachian State played with Louisville for a half before that game got away from them, but it tells me that Appy State can hang with the top-end talent of BCS teams. The Mountaineers are a slick shooting team and they defend the perimeter well. They boast four double-digit scorers and really have some moxie. Dayton needed a 17-0 run to separate itself in a 19-point win over Presbyterian on Saturday. Again, the key here is the fact that Chris Johnson and Marcus Johnson, two of Dayton’s best and most versatile players, are likely out this evening. I think that Dayton can hang on and win this game but asking them to lay a 16- or 18-point butt-kicking on a quality mid-major opponent is a little much.
