Suggestion: I would bump up the Mississippi State play to 1.5 Units and I would lower the Northern Iowa play to 4.0 Units.

I had my eyes on this Richmond game for weeks. But I almost bumped it for UNI in their own revenge spot (and because they are at home, whereas Richmond is on the road). But sticking with my guns.

Oh, and here is my GOTY writeup if anyone cares:

Over 70 percent of the action on this game is coming down on the Rams, so if you wait on this line you may be able to squeeze out an extra half-point. The 70 percent is down on this game for a lot of reasons. VCU has beaten Richmond five straight years. VCU has been great at home this year, beating "name" school Oklahoma. Richmond has had a nine-day layoff and they haven't won on the road yet this year. All good reasons to get on VCU. But I'm going with Richmond.

I remember last year's game because we scored with the Spiders at home at +3.5. The line is similar here but more than the venue is different. This is a significantly better Richmond team and a VCU club that has suffered some serious losses. Namely, the only reason that VCU was even in that game last year is because Eric Maynor, one of the CAA's all-time best players, was draining 26-foot 3-pointers. He scored 23 points and was unstoppable in the second half. Take away Maynor, take away brilliant head coach Anthony Grant, and you have a very different looking Rams team left with no real go-to guy and a new coach that is untested in these situations. VCU is coming off a loss at William and Mary and in that game they had a problem getting out on the shooters of the Tribe. If they don't defend the shooters that Richmond has the Spiders will turn the lights out.

While I think that VCU is weaker than they were in this game last year I feel that Richmond is a stronger basketball team. They brought back do-it-all big man Dan Geriot, who was the team's clear-cut best player two seasons ago before a knee injury wiped him out. They also have all five starters back from last year's squad and are a year tougher, stronger, and better. They have five year's worth of revenge, are the better team from the better conference, and they have been focusing on this game for a lot more than nine days, I assure you. They already have neutral court wins over Missouri and Mississippi State - which is more impressive than anything that VCU has done this year. They are one of the top defensive teams in the country and having Geriot back (and the emergence of Justin Harper) means that they aren't as weak in the interior. VCU shot 10-for-19 from deep in last year's game. That ain't happening again. And here is the best part - they haven't started shooting the ball well yet. This team is shooting about 10 percentage points behind where it was last year. I think that their little break has let them recalibrate and I expect a sharp effort this time around.

I hate having a big play like this on a road team. But taking the points in Rivalry games - especially when three of every four bets in the game is on the chalk - is never a bad strategy. And I don't think that playing at home will be able to make up for the talent deficit or the fact that our better team is going to win outright and won't need the points. This is a veteran Richmond with exceptional, experienced guards. They won't be intimidated. In fact, I think that they step up to the challenge and score a five-point win tonight in a hard fought game. This one probably won't be a blowout, unfortunately, but we don't need it to be. We need Richmond to cover +3 and I think that they will.

Dont give up on Richmond if they trail at halftime. My biggest play on 1 of my own personal picks of the season was on Richmond in their previous game vs Old Dominion. Richmond & ODU both played in the South Padre Island tournament & it was shocking that Richmond was home & only -125 ML based on the common opponents they played at South Padre. (Richmond beat Miss St by 1 point to win the tourney). Anyhow, Richmond was down by about 9 at halftime vs ODU but started the 2nd half with a 15-2 run and won by 7. 2nd half comebacks NOT a season-long trend for Richmond, but it certainly is what happened in their previous contest.
