The Yankees put an exclamation point on their season with a three game sweep over their arch rival, the Boston Red Sox. They clinched the AL East title and homefield advantage throughout the playoffs with last night’s 4-2 victory. The champagne was flowing in the locker room following the victor, as evidenced by this quote from a recap of the game. A
“roomful of All-Star multimillionaires went wild, chanting and jumping and spraying each other with bubbly. Teixeira and many others wore goggles to stave off the sting—of victory, that is.” Manager Joe Girardi:
“There’s a lot of excitement. This has been a fun group, and they enjoy it.”
Late September baseball betting is largely about focus and momentum. And this is one spot where we can expect a real problem with the Yankees focus – this was a team partying until the wee hours last night. New York will spend the final week of the regular season resting players and setting up their playoff pitching rotation. Expect multiple starters to be sitting on the bench tonight – this version of the Yankees lineup is not what you’ve been used to seeing during New York’s tremendous post All Star break run. The Yanks couldn’t care less whether they beat the Royals or not this evening. And that’s a very strong ‘bet against’ signal from any favorite.
KC stinks, and they’ve lost 23 of their last 27 games in the Bronx. The Royals have lost ten of the last eleven games started by Luke Hochevar. Normally, the night after a team clinches, we’ll see them installed as very short favorites or underdogs, but Kansas City’s track record forces the betting marketplace to put the Yanks as significant chalk. Yet KC is 13-7 in their last 20 games, winning nine times as underdogs during that span – this is not one of those ‘dead’ teams down the stretch. That gives me the confidence to support the more focused team at an attractive underdog price.
