NEW YORK YANKEES (Mitre)+115 over Toronto Blue Jays (Halladay)

4* #970 NY YANKEES over TORONTO

Their has not been a game in many seasons in which starting pitcher has been made more of a factor than it is for this setting. How else can a downtrodden team that is 27.5 games behind the other in the standings be put at this level of road favorite? And with the gap between the starters not as pronounced as they are trying to make it, we can not resist here. Yes, Roy Halladay is special, and just threw a complete-game one-hitter against the Yankees in Toronto two starts back. But that game actually works against him here, creating an added level of pride for a lineup that brings plenty of it, and now the change in venue also means an entirely different level of challenge ? he lost in his only outing from new Yankee Stadium so far, when Johnny Damon, Jorge Posada and Hideki Matsui all homered. And behind Halladay there is precious little, with last night?s draining loss at Detroit (they led by three going into the bottom of the 9th) taking away a layer of whatever limited energy was still there. Contrast this with a surging Yankee team that has gone 51-22 at home this season, including 25-6 since the All Star break. And while Sergio Mitre draws market scorn with his 7.02 ERA, there is more than meets the eye to that number. The Yankees brought him in because they thought that he would throw strikes and get ground balls, and that is just what he has done ? he has only walked 11 batters in 41 innings, and a 2.63 ratio of ground ball outs to fly outs rivals any pitcher in the Majors. But Mitre has not had the best of it in terms of balls finding holes, with a .369 BABIP that is a pendulum stretched to an extreme. That kind of extreme calls for a correction, and what better place than against a weak and tired lineup (it is rare to go from road series to road series without a night off, which was exacerbated by the length of Monday?s loss at Detroit) that brings little spark. And a New York bullpen that brings excellent current form holds a big late edge over their struggling Toronto counter-parts.
