Chicago Cubs vs Detroit TigersDetroit Tigers
No-Brainer on Detroit Tigers
Today's top play comes on the Detroit Tigers. Cubs' starter, Rich Harden is in a funk lately and I don't expect him to pull out of it in Detroit tonight. Over his last three starts, Harden is 0-2 with a 6.88 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP. In his most recent start against the Cleveland Indians, he lasted just 5 innings, giving up 7 runs on 7 hits, striking out just 2 batters. Up-and-coming starter Rick Porcello gets the call for the Tigers, and the young righty has been money for Detroit so far this season. In 13 starts, he's now 8-4 on the year with a 3.54 ERA and a WHIP of just 1.29. With the Cubs' winning percentage under .400 on the road this year, the Tigers are a very strong play at this price.
Philadelphia Phillies +160
Take the Phillies as a monster underdog at the Rays tonight. On of the main reasons this is a solid play is that Philadelphia has been so incredible on the road this season. They are currently 24-9 when playing outside of their home town. Just to put that into perspective, the Rays are 21-13 at home this year which amounts to around a .620 winning percentage. That's very good, but it's nothing like the Phillies and their .721 winning percentage on the road this season. A major reason for their success has been their hitting. The Phillies are currently scoring 6.1 runs per game and hitting .272 as a team on the road. The Rays appear to have the starting pitching edge here, but looking over the last 3 starts for both pitchers, Matt Garza actually has worse numbers than Phillies' starter, Joe Blanton. As good as Philadelphia has played on the road this year, you have to like them at this price over Tampa Bay Wednesday night.
