China does not care much for the present administration. They would much rather have a president who would continue in the footsteps of the Bush administration. While President Bush was in office, China quietly began to aggressively step into the role the US had played in Africa for the last 40+ years. Africa recieved a very clear message from the Bush administration during the crisis in Liberia not to expect US intervention for any humanitarian or political crisis while GW is in office. Liberia begged the US for assistance in controlling the rebel factions from toppling the govt. in GW's first term. Not only did the US string along Liberia of promises for months on end, but they also allowed a humanitarian crisis to spiral out of control. No other country, African or otherwise, intervened because they were all told by the US that they would assist Liberia. Liberians have always had a special affinity for Americans due to there long history with the US. The Liberians and the rest of Africa, finally came to the realization that the had only two viable options for assistance and partnerships. The EU and China stepped into the void left by GW. It has been known by everyone, that Africa holds tremendous resources, some which are not found in the US. Gold, silver, diamonds, coal, rare earth metals etc etc are some of Africa's untapped resources that need certain expertise to get at. China simply went to African nations and started building roads, rails, airports and other vital infrastructure. In a few short years, China is now the undisputed king of investment, infrastucture development, mining and for the first time ever, political/economic and soon military investment and influence. China has a stated policy to displace the US and EU in every area including military, in all of Africa. They recieved a big assist from the Bush administration who as usual, failed to see the long term consequences of their policies. While China is now a commited partner with African govts., private enterprise and people as a whole, we are investing in large tracks of sand covered land with hostile people walking all over that sand. The present administration has had to sramble to reopen the closed lines of communication in Africa and try and make up plausible excuses as to why we decided Africa has not been worth anything for 8 years. China is pumping cash and resources into Africa like GOP congressmen pumping white house page boys on Friday nights. China is in love with the idea of another 8 year grace period to bury us even further in the Sahara. One country with a coherent long term goals vs another with short sighted whirlwind tours around the globe. Thanks GW, I'm sure it's not that hard to learn Chinese. Best Bet-invest heavily in Rosetta Stone stock.
