I would disagree with you here. Politicians and their appointees are the ones that set economic policy. And as a bonus...the titans of the industry influence these politicians...so there is a direct correlation.

Various government policies have large effects on the economy. Things like tax increase/decrease, and labor/agriculture department programs. Politicians vote on the first, and appoint on the 2nd.
