Duke Coach to Obama: Worry About the Economy, Not NCAA Picks
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009...my-ncaa-picks/
Barack Obama picked North Carolina to defeat Louisville for the NCAA championship, a relatively safe selection for a trailblazing president.
Obama spent part of Tuesday making his tournament picks for ESPN, which posted his completed bracket online Wednesday and showed the First Fan filling it out with Andy Katz on the noon edition of "Sportscenter."
Of course, the president's choice drew a reaction from the Tar Heels' most intense rival.
"Somebody said that we're not in President Obama's Final Four, and as much as I respect what he's doing, really, the economy is something that he should focus on, probably more than the brackets," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said from the Blue Devils' first-round site in Greensboro, N.C.
The president had top-seeded Pittsburgh join the No. 1-seeded Tar Heels and Cardinals in the Final Four, but chose second-seeded Memphis to beat Connecticut in the West Regional.
"I think Memphis has got a very athletic team," Obama told Katz, an ESPN college basketball analyst. "I think they've got a good shot."
Perhaps showing some indecision, Obama initially had the Panthers playing Louisville for the national title in the file posted online. Pitt was scratched out of the title game in favor of North Carolina, which in turn replaced Louisville in the "champion" box.
"Here's what I like about Carolina: experience and balance," Obama said.
Familiarity, too. Obama played a pickup game with Tyler Hansbrough and the Tar Heels while campaigning in North Carolina last April.
"Now, for all the Tar Heels who are watching, I picked you last year you let me down," Obama said. "This year, don't embarrass me in front of the nation, all right? I'm counting on you. I still got those sneakers you guys gave me."
Katz interviewed Obama last October for a story about the president's brother-in-law, Oregon State basketball coach Craig Robinson. After the interview, Obama invited Katz to play in a pickup basketball game on Election Day in Chicago, and he did.
Katz extracted a promise from Obama that if elected, the new president would reveal his NCAA picks to ESPN when the pairings were announced in March.
"They stayed true to their word and didn't hesitate to get it done," Katz said.
Obama was brutally honest in assessing many of the teams, including Blake Griffin and second-seeded Oklahoma, which he has losing to Syracuse for a spot in the final eight.
"The problem with Oklahoma, they have the player of the year, but they play like, seven guys," Obama said. "I think you start getting worn down."
Among the other notable selections, Obama picked 10th-seeded Maryland to beat No. 7 seed California in the West Regional, fifth-seeded Florida State to make the round of 16, and No. 11 seed Virginia Commonwealth to beat UCLA.
Any chance the president slips away for a few minutes to see how his picks are doing when the tournament begins in earnest Thursday?
"I think the chances are pretty high," he said.

I think criticizing him for this is moronic. Asking someone to give up every semblance of a life is a little much. Obama lightly follows the sport in his time off at night and took 20 minutes out of his day to fill out a bracket.
Anyone who finds this unacceptable needs to lighten the **** up.

Almost verbatim what I was thinking. Good post.
Probably didn't even take 20 minutes.

I think this is not a big deal to spend a couple of minutes filling out a bracket...i mean this is what america is into right now. It's not like he is spending half of his term clearing brush on his ranch.

Exactly. I,m looking forward to a comparison of number of vacation days Obama takes after 8 years in office compared to Bush.
And I agree with others who think this makes K look petty. He is not putting the ecomony aside while he worries about his bracket. It's great to have such a bright, hard working president.

Obama brackets while economy burns
http://lonestartimes.com/2009/03/19/...economy-burns/
While the Obama Administration confronts multiple “crises” (at least according to the MSM) related to the economy, the Egomaniac in Chief is finding plenty of frivolous ways to expended his precious and limited time.
Who’d u thunk it? President Obama has done the impossible - he has made Sheila Jackson Lee look camera shy.
We had barely grown accustomed to his seemingly hourly press conferences and endless parties (great example in tough economic times, eh?), when President Know-It-All pops up in front of the cameras on ESPN to - you guessed it - give us his expert insights on basketball and tell us how he filled out his NCAA tournament bracket!
It is nice to know Chief Self-Aggrandizer is managing the nation’s problems so well that he can waste much of his day filling out college basketball brackts (after consultation with his press secretary, of course) and then shoot the breeze with those intellectual ESPN types. On the other hand, it is one more TV camera President Look-At-Me can shove his mug in front of.
But the real entertainment came from Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski - called “Coach K” by sports writers and announcers, largely because most of them can neither correctly spell nor pronounce the coach’s name - after learning Duke had been shut out of the Chatterbox in Chief’s Final Four predictions. Krzyzewski succinctly observed: “Somebody said that we’re not in President Obama’s Final Four, and as much as I respect what he’s doing, really, the economy is something that he should focus on, probably more than the brackets . . ..”
Touche, Coach K!
As for Obama, the frivolity never stops. Tonight, you can catch him on that hard news program, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
Perhaps in the near future we can look forward to seeing the most powerful (though not the most serious) man in the world stop by The View or Ellen (she is having Anderson Cooper on today, can Obama be far behind?), or put in a guest spot on My Name Is Earl. (On second thought, forget The View, as that football player’s wife just might ask a real question before the show’s unpalatable stable of shrews can shout her down.) Heck, given President “I Won”’s competitive nature, perhaps he and Michelle can be persuaded to take their chances on Dancing With The Stars.
After all, he seems to have plenty of free time.

Coack K is completely wrong. Obama should focus much MORE on filling out brackets than "fixing" our economy. If only all our politicians could waste all their time on something as trivial and harmless as this, we'd all be a lot better off.

Obama should stfu about sports. He's a huge bandwagon jumper. He became a Steelers fan for the Super Bowl and now he's a UNC fan.
Obama, we know you're not qualified for the position, but please at least make an effort.
He's constantly trying to play up what a huge basketball fan he is, and these "picks" were a huge publicity stunt.

Obama works nonstop for 2 months and these losers are angry cause he took half an hour off to talk about sports?
Where was this outrage when Dumbya was vacationing 4 years out of 8 while al Qaeda flew planes in to buildings, deficit grew over 10 Trillion, 8 million jobs were lost and subprime lending spiralled out of control?
I mean they were angry at him cause he's was supposedly doing too much.... now they are angry cause he's not doing enough. Make up your f'n mind!
