Default Lance Armstrong to run in New York marathon

Stick with cycling Lance, but not roid cycles.

LONDON (Reuters) - Seven times Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong will make his marathon debut in the New York City race on November 5, New York Road Runners president Mary Wittenberg said on Thursday.

Armstrong, 34, set his record winning streak after he had been diagnosed with cancer and given less than a 50 percent chance of survival.

"I was thrilled to learn late last night of Lance's decision to run the New York City marathon," Wittenberg said in a statement. "A bit like winning the lottery after you thought you had lost.

"Lance epitomizes both the American spirit and the spirit of the marathon and it is no surprise that his drive, motivation and focus lead him to his next challenge."

Lance started out doing triatholons, so it's not like he hasn't run a marathon before. The article sounds like he's never laced up a pair of sneakers before. I expect him to do well in the NYC marathon.

If he likes to run, he should do that ironman competition in Hawaii. Atleast you know he'll do well in cycleling.

Here's an article with a little more info.

It's really hard to judge where his mind is at. It sounds like his legs really aren't in running shape. Speaking from experience, going from cycling to running has got to be one of the toughest things in sports. It's completely different sets of muscles, not to mention the pounding of running. Then again, Lance knows what he is getting into. Plus his lungs and heart have unmatched capacity. It would definitely be worth watching if Lance gave it a try.

I don't think Lance can win it, but if he can run in the 2:30's it would be very impressive. That kind of outing would virtually make him a cinch in any ironman event, given that his cycling is so strong.
