You may still join bud. You're one week late so might not have as many points accumulated toward the season ending prizes, but you can still join right now and have a chance at these weekly prizes.
All you have to do is properly register, go to this contests site and read through the requirements. Basically, you must post up a minimum of $100 through one of these sign up spots for each book.

Is that right? It used to be that you didn't start working on your official record for the year until week 3. Has that changed?

Posters can participate in BTP at ANY point in the season. Each week is an independent contest with regards to weekly prize money. However, posters who play in at least 10 of the 14 available weeks will be eligible for season ending grand prize money as follows:
• Season Ending Grand Prize: At the conclusion of the 14 weekly contests, the top three highest scoring contestants will share in an additional $5000 USD as follows: 1st Place $2500 USD; 2nd Place $1500 USD; 3rd Place $1000 USD.
• Tiebreakers for season-ending grand prizes are as follows: 1. High Score; 2. Number of Correct Best Bets; 3. Total Money Won. If any season-ending ties remain, prize amounts will be split accordingly.
• In order to be eligible for the season-ending Grand Prize, contestants will be required to participate in at least 10 of the 14 available weekly contests.

Great Job guys! Congrats to the 1st week winners.
Not surprising that the number of players has fallen off from last year, but with all the requirements it was to be expected.
I have to say not being able to see what people picked (before and after the games are completed), besides the Prick's choices, is a major disappointment.
Regardless of the implied advantages of pickers who used other player's picks to make last minute choices, that was a definite strategy in when you had to make a choice (usually within the last hour.) Also it was a useful handicapping tool when making on-line book bets for that week.
Without the ability to look at the top handicapper's BTP choices, prior to the start of the games, the BTP contest seems a bit less exciting - not to mention quite mysterious. Why not tell us what the players chioces were?
Also, if we joined under "Free play" will those points be eligible (or be negated) if we decide to enter by creating a new on-line book account and depositing $100 later on? Is there a deadline for joining the real money contest?
For example, let's say I accumulate 5 points (or -5 points) under free play for 3 weeks, then in the 4th week join 5dimes and deposit $100. What happens to the 5 points (or -5 points) in regards to the season ending race?
Remember - last year, there was a minimum weekly participation requirement and some just met that requirement and stopped picking in fear of getting minus points. The winning season totals were around 25-28 points. With the possibility of getting negative points, it actually may not be a bad idea to avoid entering until more info on the teams become available - (and the reason why understanding the free play points are used towards the real money points is important) Right now, real points and "play" points seem equal on the scoreboard towards the final standings - they should be separated. If the negative "free" points are removed once a "real" account is established - this may be a incentive to join the "real" points race. If the negative "free" points are counted - it will be a problem in getting "real" players to join.
With a minimum 10 week requirement, there is plenty of time to join, if this issue is clarified.

i don't like the idea of being able to see players picks...for example fading certain posters to gain an edge on the yearly leaderboard....

• At any time, Free Play participants may upgrade their account by adding a new sportsbook account by following the instructions in “My Accounts” after logging in to SBRcontests.com. Note that upgrading from Free Play mode will not apply to any currently active contests and will only apply to future contests.

So the "play" points are negated, and you start from scratch once you enter the "real money" contest.
In other words, the -5 points under the "free Play" are now negated and you start from 0 (same with if you accmulated +5 "free Play" points).
I don't have a problem with this, I just want it clarified.

In response to player feedback, the contest site is being upgraded this week (by Friday) so that the BTP page will contain the following:
- Live Weekly Leaderboard
- Season Standings Update Weekly
- View All Players' Picks for Current Week
- Live BTP Consensus Picks Each Week
- Leave A Message for The Prick
BTP was originally designed this year so that player picks would be hidden to avoid any advantages toward the end of the season with regards to season ending prizes. However, poster sentiment has been overwhelmingly in favor of restoring reporting functions similar to past BTP seasons.

True, when I was in the hunt for the season ending money last year, I had to see where other top players were going, and if you did not, you did so at your own risk.
However, if you were using the BTP as a handicapping tool, it was nice to see where the top handicappers in the contest were going. (unlike watching the Hilton contest?) How about setting a pick deadline, then revealing the BTP choices so we can see what Doc or Cabo likes 2 hours or so before the game starts. Not only was there money to be won by playing the BTP last year, there was money to be made in following what these people picked.
It is clear this year's BTP has made it a more level playing field in making choices, but it was more exciting to see what people's picks were. Now you can't even see what they picked last week. - but it looks like some of the old functions will be restored.....Thanks guys for the responses.....

I liked the idea of not showing the picks of other contestants this year. The thought of players blindly following the best picks of others is not very exciting.
Since the Prick has to pick a MNF game, it would make sense to show the standings after the contest is closed for the week. That brings the new MNF angle into focus. Whenever the Prick, on Sunday night, can still win 3 or 4 games it would be helpful to 4-0 pickers to know how many others are also 4-0.
Why not leave it to the individual contestants if they want to share their picks for the week or not? (check or uncheck box)
Also, is it still required to pick all four games at the same time? Since the lines are live this year, it would make sense if contestants could enter them at different times.

Nice way to kick things off players.
I'm seeing that a lot of rules have changed since last year. I didn't realize. I am confused but I'm positive that the best approach for me is to pick better.

Assuming the account was created as outlined on SBRcontests.com, then you should be good to go. There is no deadline for joining any of the contests ... there will always be at least one contest going on at any given time. BTP for weekly prizes, MLB for monthly prizes, NBA for monthly prizes, year-round fantasy sports, free casino games, and more coming.
Good luck and have fun!
