If Carson Palmer or Tony Romo had suffered an injury during the preseason and had to miss Week 1, betting early wouldn't look so hot...

If you are an advantage gambler it only matters if you have a large enough bankroll that TVM is not a huge concern. If you are a rec gambler, you should hate that kind of bet and prefer RSW bets which at least give you utility over a long period.
