    Even more Warren horror storys

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What you have to understand is that I started out like everyone else. When I realized I could not win on my own, I turned to the experts and I picked what I conceived to be the biggest name in the business. At that time it was Mike Warren. And here's what Mike Warren did to me.

It was the late 70's, but it seems like yesterday. Just a few years out of high school. I had not yet started my own business, and to be brutally honest with you, I didn't have a lot of money. I had gotten myself into trouble for the very first time betting those big favorites in baseball. There was no way I could pay what I was down, so I decided to contact an expert. I took the scientific approach. I bought all the publications and looked around. I went with Mike because he had the biggest, best looking ads. I was really stupid, but I figured the bigger the operation, the better my chance to win, and my ass was in the wringer so I dialed the number. Of course no-one was available to talk to me. I had to leave my name and number, so like a happy idiot, I did. I never did get to speak to Mike, but about 15 minutes later I get a call back from a salesman.

This guy sounds perfect. He 's got the gruff voice, the slight Brooklyn accent, you could almost hear the cigar in his mouth. He seemed curiously interested in how much I bet, and I told him straight away about my little problem. He assured me that Mike had the information and contacts to make that problem disappear. All I had to do was sign up for a week, and play the games he gave me. The price was 250, which seemed like more back then than it does now. I whipped out my CC. First day, game one… loser. Second day, game two… loser. Third day, game 3… loser. Now I'm really in deep shit. My salesman, I think his name was Sam, calls me on Friday after the 3rd game goes down. I can't tell you how desperate I was. He starts talking to me in hushed tones about a special game Mike’s got going for Saturday. He gives me the whole speech, and I'm eating it up. Sam says that Mike’s information is so strong, that I can bail myself out completely with just this one game. But there’s a catch. The game would cost me another $250. I tried to argue that I had paid for the week, hadn't had a winner yet, and that Mr. Warren owed me this game. Sam stood firm. You get what you pay for. Inside information costs big money.

Guess what I did? That right, I maxed out the CC, and bought the game. At least I didn't have to sweat. I think I was down 6-0 in the 2nd inning. It took me three months to pay off the debt. In the meantime strange things began to happen around me. My mailbox started filling up with Sports junk. People kept calling me at home trying to sell me games. It got so bad I had to change my number, but the mail came in droves for years until I moved. Do I blame Mike for losing 4 in a row? I didn't then, I don't now. Anyone can loose over the short term. But I will hate him till the day I die for making me pay for that extra game. I resent him intensely for selling my name and address to every Tom, Dick, and Asshole crawling around in the dirt. And I will despise him forever, for advising me to bet way over my head. And that's what Mike Warren did to me. Every word true.

I've heard variations of this kind of story more times than I could count. Good message.

Too bad so many people have to go and make their own mistakes instead of just learning from the stories of others.

if somebody is stupid enough to buy picks, then you deserve to lose even more money than you already have picking losers on your own.

I know of a few very good handicappers who sell their picks, but on the whole people shouldnt be buying picks. A recipe for disaster.

Well a lot of people are desperate and don't really have much choice. People make bad decisions all the time. I can't tell you how many students on campus cheat.

I don't blame them...i wish people would read these stories ahead of time.

I have a great article in this course I teach about persuasion about touts who use certain persuasion tactics. I'll see if i can find it on the internet and post it somewhere.

Even though I never had first hand experience with Mike Warren (I believe his real name is Mike Lasky), I know from friends very close to the business that he was notoriously the biggest dirtball of all-time. I also don't believe in buying picks form anyone, but believe Phil Steele to be one of the most honorable and puts out a great college football annual (the best I've seen) every year.

The thing is you have to overcome the serice fees before you even begin to show a profit so in reality they have to hit a high percentage of winners in order for the subscriber to win.

Good post, I'm a closet Steele fan. I think he works hard at delivering. His underdog pick of the week is always worth looking at.
