A great list dan. Try showing up on Tuesday and keep your eye out since that's usually collection day.Originally Posted by bigboydan

You can add cardrooms to that list as well.

it's more of a local police type sting operation if anything. besides, cops are not going to go out of there way to do something like that.Originally Posted by magnavox

rickysteve,
I'd tread very lightly when it comes to dealing with locals...with such good online books out there that will pay you lightning quick, it's often times not worth risking it with a local...if you do pick a local, make sure you pick one that's been in business for a while...

pags, you will never get a correct answer on how long locals have been in bussiness.

I have no idea how to get up-and-running with a local. I have never used one and have no plans to start.
But I am enjoying this thread.

true dan, but you can ask people around town how long a guy's been running numbers and get a good idea...

thats still not always a good asessment though pags.

dan,
dude, c'mon...if you live in a town long enough and know who the players are and ask who's a good guy that books bets and you ask enough guys that you trust...you know, get a track record of a guy that pays, that's always widely available, that's the best way because you can't look at a business liscense or public records or anything...
all this being said, locals are risky period...I wouldn't even mess with one nowadays...

if you say so pags.
from my experiences with locals they always keep you guessing. so, you really don't know what to expect from them accept being paid or collecting.

Are you mad, BBD?Originally Posted by bigboydan

why would i be mad taco. all i'm mearly saying is that locals will always keep you guessing.

I was joking, BBD. Just trying to show that it's a bit dumb to dismiss the opinion of someone (i.e. you) who frequently uses locals.

There is an inherent contradiction in this.
If you dont know a 'local' to the extent that you hang around pool halls to find one ... then how could you ever verify his 'character'?
Do 'locals' give bonuses or something? Sorry, I just dont get why anyone would want to use one?
Its 2006 not 1932 !!

Yes, they eagerly hand out "bonuses" to people who don't pay them.Originally Posted by natrass

Sorry, taco, Ill put it in a simpler way.
Given that there are possibly 1000 bookies on the internet, with about 20 of them being trustworthy, then why use some unknown guy in a poolhall? Why go in for the murky world of "Fat Tony" when there is betfair, pinnacle, etc.?
The only thing I can think of is cash-flow ... ie being paid in readies ...

Why. Do you think I'm thick?Originally Posted by natrass

There's no Pinnacle, no ESB - what do they do? They use their locals which have been around for years.Originally Posted by natrass
Fast forward 15 years, people still use locals because:
1) They have been around for years and people trust them.
2) Everything is in cash - none of these Neteller transactions showing up on your bank account.
3) People still distrust offshore operations - you say yourself that out of 1000 only 20 are reputable. People won't move from a trusted local to an untrusted offshore.
4) Lines might be favourable to the dog bettor.
Since you don't really need a local in England, these are only possible reasons. I'm sure that someone who does actually use one can comment further.

nowadays the local bookies are being faized out one way or another. the only ones that will survive nowadays is the ones that have a very nice established client base, and a few other intangables![]()
