In reference to what, JJ?

One poster here correctly noted a week or so ago that Steele is largely a "trends" player.

(I say "player," but i don't mean "bettor." Steele once admitted (on the old Stardust handicapping celebrity tournament) that he never bet.)

His preseason mag, which is a good buy at ten bucks but could be better if he stifled his verbal diarhhea and made it more bettor-friendly, doesn't specifically cater to bettors, tho 90 percent of his sales must be to gamblers

His preseason magazine is without equal and should be purchased by every college football handicapper.

By far the best college preseason mag WAS the Gold Sheet, when it was published after the summer practices. Because all these preseasoa mags that come out in June, after th spring game, are just spinning fantasy when it comes to "projected starers."

Even the head coaches have no good idea who is going to start at some position until after the August game and practice.

It shows how smart the football bettors are, that they prefer a May/June mag with no solid info on that score, than one that catered to bettors by coming out after the summer game.

Steele's is worthwhile, but its big failing is that Steele - on all those committees that pick the best posiiton players, including the Heisman award - is very careful not to mention betting and ATS in his pub.

And I defy anyone to read the entire Position Outlook for all 120 teams in his pub. Going back 4, 5, years, sometimes 10 or 15 years --- that does the handicapper trying to win money zero good.

It's a good buy for the money, but could be a lot, lot better. I'd trade 10 years of Steele for one of the mags that Gold Sheet used to publish.

Steele also isn't that great at 'capping.

I recall chcking one of the tout monitor service (one of the two honest ones) and at season's end his best bets had hit a big 39%.

Which was better than trends capper Marc Lawrence, whose Best Bets came in that year at a resounding 29%. Cripes, just use a hatpin . . .
