Even if he paid for the house with cash the taxes and maintenance will kill him without income.

A 5 million dollar house for example will have $100,000 property taxes every year, $50,000 per year home insurance, $50,000 utility bills per year, $100,000 per year in lawn, tree, pool maintenance, etc.
