Default Tell me about sports fans in your city

. . . preferably in 150 words or less. That limit is optional (obviously) but I really want to get the major flavor of different cities more than a forensic examination.

TORONTO

TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS!!!. Everything else takes a back seat. On local sports talk radio, they will gab for hours analyzing defensemen from the farm team - in the middle of the summer. They freak out over everything. It gets very annoying and irrational sometimes. But even when the team sucked for years and years, they never stopped selling out.

Toronto fans are not loud at games though. This also goes for our other big teams, the Blue Jays, Raptors and Argos. Fans tend to be reserved - plus there is a large corporate presence at games - so we have relatively quiet crowds.

Consistent support is much harder to come by for our other teams. Everything in this town is in the shadow of the TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS!!!

Indianapolis has some flat out ugly fans. They tend to be fat, ugly and have no idea about the sport or team they cheer for. To be honest, these people are flat out beneath me.

IU fans are the worst because in addition to being fat, bald, and ugly, these guys tend to bring that nerd look with them wherever they go. A if, they are OK with being a nerd. It's once thing to be smart as that is a positive trait, but can't you at least workout and dress and act like you have some kind of substance and style.

In addition to the IU nerds, the Colts "soccer mom" fans are the worst. These middle aged fatasses dress up in Colts blue and have no idea what football is or even the rules. They think they are going crazy by painting "18" on each one of their cheeks. I'd love to know where thse people were in the pre Peyton Manning era.

Fans in the New Braunfels area tend to support high school football first, the University of Texas sports second, Dallas Cowboys third and the San Antonio Spurs fourth. Since there are just three area high schools, the battle lines are drawn accordingly (I remain neutral having not grown up here). Just about all of them hate Jerry Jones.

I would love to tell you about a particular Little League 'fan' I had the misfortune of meeting last week. But the investigation into his behavior is still ongoing

I figured that with high school football. If I eventually have a son and he is into athletics as he undoubtally will, I feel i will have to move to either Florida, California, or Texas to get a fair shot and for him to reach his potential. That is where all the big time players go for football and basketball. At least it seems although i read something saying Louisiana actually produced the most pro athletes.

I want to ditto up on TGO's assessment of Indy fans. These fans just have no clue. I think half the time they are rooting for the wrong team. Moving an NFL team to Indy still puzzles me. There is no legitimate fan support. On the other hand, there is little pressure to produce which may become a distraction and an annoyance. I think in Dallas, sometimes the team is under so much pressure to win yet another Super Bowl that the team can implode. I think that was a definite factor why Dallas didn't rip off like 5 or 6 in a row in the early '90s.

Kansas City fans are first big Chief fans and far behind that is the Royals. KU basketball is likely more popular than even the Royals. Large variety of people of all classes are fans of all of them.

I hate Lakerfans! Not lakerfan on here, Lakers fans in general. Mostly
a bunch of people that only support them when they are winning.

I have been a die hard Clippers fan for years, I never bandwagon jumped
on no team.

LA has alot of Raiders fans, mostly mexicans. We have alot of Mexicans
here in LA. Raiders always talked about.

Nobody cares about Hockey.

LA Dodgers are another gangsta team.
Angels are orange county- far from LA.

I will say that when I was in KC for a few ball games a few years back, the fans at Kauffman Std treated me like a returning war hero. Very nice folks at the park and all around the city.

I do not know if you are interested in Czech fans.
There are only 2 major sports: soccer and ice-hockey. Core fans from cities (Prague, Brno, Ostrava...) are only nazi-skinheads, esp. soccer fans. And they are very violent and very stupid.
Fortunately, thay usually decide to fight amongst themselves and police asists them. But some incidents (for example when some of those idiots throw a stone into the window of train and almost killed women) happen from time to time.
When I was in Brno (after big accident walking with crutches) I also got one nice hit into my head from a group of skinheads going to soccer.

Here in Alabama only one thing matters: college football - more specifically, that which is played in Tuscaloosa and Auburn. Bammers and Aubs give the appearance of caring about other college events, especially the Bammers since they can't beat the Aubs in football right now.

The general Bammer is overweight, mostly from years of excessive drinking. They treat Bear Bryant as a god, and think no one else measures up to his standards. They also for some reason believe they have won 12 national championships (They have these annoying shirts - "Got Twelve?"), when no one outside Tuscaloosa has ever credited them with any more than six. This is the key ingredient of the Bammers - focusing on the past, and ignoring the present and future.
True story: Two years ago, on Super Bowl Sunday, the largest picture on the front page of the local sports section was not of any SB participant, but of Alabama head coach Mike Shula.
The general Aub is a little more educated, and act as if they are much classier - though both are sore losers and winners. I know of at least three Auburn fans who have peed on Bear Bryant's grave. Auburn girls are unquestionably more attractive than their counterparts in Tuscaloosa. Aubs don't understand why Bammers concentrate on events that happened before their lifetime.

Then there's myself, born in Oklahoma, and having lived most of my life in the DC area. While I have always had a passion for college sports, the nature of these people bewilders me. 98 out of 100 honestly couldn't tell you who Johan Santana plays for, but 99 out of 100 could tell you what year "Punt, Bama, Punt" occurred.

Fans here in Chicago love all of the local teams except when it comes to baseball. Now that the Sox have won the World Series alot of Cubs fans have jumped on the White Sox bandwagon. It's a great rivalry that no other city can match.

In Wisconsin, where I was born and raised, the Green Bay Packers are king. The Packers are the NFL's oldest franchise, and they were a championship factory running through Green Bay until the days after Lombardi. Even though the Packers were pathetic for 25 years after Lombardi, the fanbase was very loyal. Every kid wore Packers clothing to school during football season, and every Sunday was reserved for watching the Packers on TV. Any random grandmother on the street can tell you the name of the QB for the Packers, and can probably name several other players, some of which may have played for Lombardi.

The Brewers and Bucks don't really get any attention at all. People know that the Brewers exist but couldn't name a player on the team, some old timers might remember back to the '80s with Yount and Molitor. The Bucks are an even bigger anomoly, owned by Senator Herb Kohl, otherwise nobody knows or cares about them. Wisconsin Badger football is kinda big since Barry Alvarez started taking the team to bowl games, otherwise the Badgers were a footnote on the back page of the sports section. Basketball just isn't that huge in Wisconsin and the Badgers hoops team is noticed if it does well in the tournaments, otherwise nobody cares. The Wisconsin Badgers hockey team just won the NCAA championship again, but I don't think anyone in Wisconsin knows or cares besides hardcore hockey fans.

You gave me a good laugh with that. I don't understand how such a misunderstanding can exist.

Neither do I. Here's a quick rundown.

1925, 1926, and 1930 – Alabama claims national titles, though all were in the pre-modern era. The AP poll began in 1936, and that is the year every other school begins counting. There were only a couple programs in the country that had strong programs at the time, and no set means for determining a national champion.

1961 – First national championship recognized by the AP. Ohio St. won the FWAA championship. This one is completely legitimate.

1964 – Won the AP and UPI national championship. Arkansas won the FWAA and Notre Dame the NFF. Here’s the comedic part – Alabama lost their bowl game 21-17 to Texas, while Arkansas had a perfect season.

1965 – Bama was awarded the AP and FWAA, but Michigan State was also awarded the FWAA, as well as the NFF and UPI. This was certainly a split title year.
Here’s how it happened:
At the end of the regular season Michigan State, Arkansas and Nebraska were all 10–0, with Alabama at 8–1–1. Michigan St. lost their bowl game (the Rose Bowl, which was basically a road game at a UCLA team they had already beaten once that year), as did Arkansas. When Alabama upset Nebraska, they had won the national championship. Historians say they were not even close to the best team (they lost to a Georgia team that did not even make a bowl game), but this is a legitimate championship.

1973 – Alabama finished the year ranked #4 in the AP poll, losing their bowl game 24-23 to undisputed national champion Notre Dame. Yet, they claim a national championship.

1978 – AP national champion. UPI went to Southern Cal. Both teams had one loss – Alabama’s was to Southern Cal. Still, this one is counted by everyone, but it still seems bogus.

1979 – Undisputed national championship.

1992 – Undisputed national championship.

New York is a great sports town where fans are crazy and great.

Ranger’s fans and Rangers games at the garden are the best, there is nothing more eclectic than the garden on a sold out night for a Rangers game.

Yankees games would be next going to the house in the Bronx what more can I say, it is refreshing that even with 200mil dollar payroll tickets are still price good and it not a bunch of corporate suits who just want to be there and than don't show when the team sucks, like knick fan.

I don't go to Knicks or Mets games ,maybe if I get freebies but.

New York splits fans this way

1. Yankees, Knicks, Giants and Rangers

2. Mets, Nets, Jets and Islanders some Devils

I can see where the rest of the country can see NY fans as arrogate and annoying but for the most part they are passionate and good sports fans.

UNLV revived the fans around here, with their great season this year. 30-7. Thats going to be hard to repeat, but maybe top recruits will start looking at UNLV again.

Football at UNLV, well you all know that story.

Here in Boston it's all about the pro teams--not much interest in college sports around here. The Bruins are now completely irrelevant, and the Celtics aren't far behind, although that will likely change if they can land a top 2 pick and get Durant or Oden. Basically, it's a 2 team town. The Patriots are huge, but despite winning 3 of the last 6 Super Bowl's, they are a distant second to the Red Sox. This will never change. The Celtics, Bruins, and Pats could all win a championship the same year while the Sox lose 110 games and the Sox would still be number 1. Fenway Park is a piece of shit--the tickets are ridiculously overpriced, the seats are too close to each other, and the view in half the seats in the park is obstructed by something. Despite this, every home game is sold out within minutes. With the addition of Matsuzaka, interest in the team this season is higher than ever....if that is possible.

Oh yeah, we don't like the Yankees around here.

I don't know, in my experience you got the Mets and Yankees in the wrong group.

As for the Nets, I don't think I've ever actually met a true Nets fan, as opposed to all the others, which are legion. But if the Nets really do move to Brooklyn - all of a sudden there will be a million or two Nets fans overnight in NYC.

New York fans are crazy about there sports. I have to say the Yankees and Knicks get the majority of the press in this city. Followed VERY closely by the Mets, Giants, Jets, Rangers on the lower tier are the Islanders, Devils and Nets. I love the atmosphere when any of these two get together in their respective sports. You can see the true passion first hand tommorow of the NY fan when the Isles play the Rangers at the Coliseum, its usually a 60/ 40 split there with a soccer atmosphere its absolutely nuts. To bad I'll have to miss it this time around.

Here in the Philly area fans are well known for their a$$-hole-ism and their general hatred towards any other fans for other teams in other areas. There is however an expectation that the teams such as the Eagles, Sixers, Phillies and the Flyers will eventually be beaten in the playoffs. If there is ever a champion in any of these teams, watch the news for a riot of epic proportions.
