The CFL's Ottawa Renegades are currently looking for new ownership. The CFL has had a long, checkered, often tragically comical history in the nation's capital - and unless a buyer steps forward by about this time next week, chances are no Ottawa franchise will operate this season and the league will go with 8 teams.
So if you've ever thought about getting in on the exciting world of pro sports franchise ownership, you can probably get them cheap. You might even have enough coins between your sofa cushions to do the job.

Yeah, what's the price? Thats actually my long term goal is to own an NBA franchise. Of course, yours truly will be President and GM and show these fools just how easy it really is to make this decisions.

There's no asking price out there that I have heard. It's all complicated financial stuff (which I don't have a good head for) which would depend on willingness to take on different parts of the current debt load. It sounds like, if it's a no-go for this season, there is a good chance the franchise will be back next year. Don't ask me to explain. All I know is training camps open next month so they're going to have to decide pretty soon if it's an 8 or 9 team league this year.

Some teams would be fun to own. Canadian football I tend to think not.

i'm suprised that some U.S. investors aren't interested in buying the team, and moving it to the states. wasn't the CFL considering expanding to the U.S. a few years back ?

The CFL did a major expansion to the states in the 90's. There were teams in San Antonio, Shreveport, Birmingham, Memphis, Las Vegas, Sacramento.
Baltimore in fact won the Grey Cup in 1995. However most of the teams lasted for 1-2 seasons and I think most would agree that the experiment was not a rousing success. (Right now, fans of the league would be chuckling at the understatement.)

You have stumped me on that one, my friend. I wouldn't be surprised. Say what you want about the CFL, but while these upstart leagues have come and gone, the CFL has endured for a long time.

Isiah Thomas should have bought it so he could make out with all the guys on the team right before he runs it into the ground and bankrupts the CFL like he bankrupted the CBA.
Did you know that moron actually has a book out entitled "How to succeed in business" ? Unreal. He is the biggest disaster that is allowed to live the country has ever seen. |

I just hope they come back as the Ottawa Rough Riders. I think it's a shame that, somewhere in their revolving door ownership situation, they lost their traditional name.
How could you not love it when they would play Saskatchewan and it would be the Rough Riders versus the Roughriders? It was a 9 team league and two of the teams were the Roughriders. I mean, how great was that?

What is Ottowa going to do for great sporting action now? Clubs should not come and go like pop groups.

Ottawa has the Senators who are among the favorites to win the Stanley Cup. The owner of the Senators, Barry Melnyk, who is already something of a hero around town, was apparently considering taking on the Roughies. Now that ops are suspended he can take his time organizing a prudent bid for the team (if that's what he wants.)
Sports fans in Ottawa should be so lucky.
