A major bank will not give you a problem with the check. They might place a 5 business day hold on it, but they'll definitely accept it. Good news too is that because of this disastrous US economy, the CAD is worth 95% of the USD.

Why wouldn't they be accepted??

They figure out the exchange rates the same way a Canadian bank figures out the exchange rate for any other country's currency.

i have never had a problem with a canadian check from a book,deposited them and they always cleared in 2-3 days,no questions asked

Does the check say CAD or USD? If the amount is USD, then there is no problem.

Does that mean USD?

And actually, if it had been CAD, they wouldn't have short changed you $160, they would've been giving you an extra $160.
