what did the GMU win mean for mid-majors in the future
with this GMU win today over Uconn today. where does this put the mid-majors now when it comes to tourney bids i wonder.
i don't think the committee can overlook these mid-majors next year, after the type of impact they have had in the tourney this year.

It might mean more for recruiting to begin with. And if the talent level increases because of Gee Mason's fine showing to places like your Bradley's, Southern Illinois's, et al, then the committee won't be able to ignore them.
The Committee doesn't do any favors to the "mid-majors" by arbitrarily throwing a few extra in next year that may not deserve it. If they get extras in and then get crushed, it sets them back a whole lot more than they are able to advance by a performance such as this years. Let's hope that Committee members start watching a little more basketball as opposed to watching a bunch of technical indices when making their decisions.

I think they have been doing a good job getting the Mid-Majors into the tournament. I will agree with Iset, they dont need to stick a few more in there and have them get crushed. That will hurt, more then help the Mid-Majors. So I think they just keep doing what they have and everything will work out. The recruting will help the Mid-Majors get more in, if they prove they belong durning the season.
Their success could hurt their scheduling of Majors, because why would Majors want to risk a loss like that durning their non-conference schedules? The Majors use to play these teams to pad their record, its going to get tougher now, I feel. So now the Mid-Majors creditable wins could be fewer because of all this.

the mid-majors can't get a home and home series with a big time schools. it's not so much that the bigger schools are afraid of them, but rather the loss of income for the bigger schools. thats whats hurting these mid-majors.

Good thing about the tournament criteria now is that you are going to start seeing more big time match-upsin November and December. Because the committee has basically said it is better to play the #1 team in the nation and lose by 12 then it is to play Stoney Brook and win by 42.
Memphis got a 1 seed this year by who they played in November and December. They go to Maui next year.
Thats what killed GW's seeding this year and killed Gonzaga's in years past. It's not if you win or lose sometimes, but who you play. That's where the Hofstra's have a hard time. They will never get invited to play in Maui.
The key to the Tournament for a mid-major lies in having a dominating season and winning your conference tournament, and then following it up the next year with a very good season. I don't think I have a problem with that kind of system. If you're a mid-major and you want to be treated like a big boy, then it needs to happen at the PROGRAM level and not just a flash-in-the-pan season.

i'd love to see a football playoff system of some sort but,it will never happen in football Willie. the NCAA will never give up all that garunteed money from all those bowl games.

GM making the final four and Bradley's run past Kansas and Pitt might get these teams a few non-conference games next year. I know I wouldn't mind seeing GM early next year against a few power conference teams. That will help them get the exposure and strength of schedule to get an at large if needed. These are the major change in my eyes, non-conference scheduling and of course recruiting. Like Onlooker stated, the tournament will base their picks on merit. I know some people think pre-season tournaments will never invite mid-majors...look at Gonzaga. They went to Maui from a lesser respected conference because they've shown through the years they are a good team. One stretch of 4 great games by GM doesn't prove they can repeat that next year with a new team. It's a great thing for mid-majors but it's up to those teams to utilize their narrow window of opportunity.
Mid majors have come full circle over the years. Personally I would to see GMU win the whole thing, so teams like them won't get passed on by the committee in the future.

ILL, dick vitale must have had some sort of clue about the mid-majors. Vitale stuck up for them after the selections were made on sunday.

Dickhead Vitale always sticks up for the mid-majors so long as they don't interfere with his beloved ACC (Duke and UNC especially). He's so predictable. He'll bitch about any team from a power conference that played a "creampuff" schedule when he's comparing them to a mid-major he's touting whose overall schedule is even weaker.
