Basically, you can break down parlays into smaller parlays.
For ease of example, a 3-team parlay can be broken down into the 1 3-teamer and three smaller 2-teamers. You'd have to pay 4 times your stake to play them.
Or a 4-teamer can be 4 3-teamers, and 6 2-teamers.
Personally, I see it as a way that books prey on the "Oh, shit, I missed my parlay by one....again!" mentality. Consider that if you miss just one of those, you still lose. You win 2.6 for the one 2-teamer that wins and lose 3 for the 3 that lost for a net of -.4 units. Which, of course, seems better than losing your entire stake for missing one leg of it, but if you miss two, then nothing pays out and you're out 4 units.
