I will honestly say that I have made more money in the last few years playing Poker than I have for the previous 10 years betting games. I still like to play the games, but I make no mistake knowing where my bread and butter is. To me, Poker is a much more profitable way to make a living gambling.

I have had the exact opposite experience, which is more a testament to my lack of poker ambition than anything. I got really sick of it right about the time I should have been moving up significantly.

From what I have witness through the years its either or the other. I have seen great punters loose it in poker and vice versa. It's very rare someone who can master both of them.

Exactly right. Thats why I started the thread to see who excels with what. If someone is cleaning up on both than more power to them, but that is usually not the case.

yep. I think the last tourney he won, he turned around and lost most of it quickly thereafter on sports.

Phil Ivey lost 2 mil on the Lakers in the NBA championship.

Mike loses his share in cash games too. He's a good tournament player who, in the past, was better known for his implosions and bluffing off and/or donking off his stack late in tourneys. His cash game play is very similar.

It's pretty simple, really. On a starting bankroll of 5k, you can easily make 3k/month playing live SSNL with very little poker ability. On a starting bankroll of 5k, good luck doing that with sports. Of course you could have a 3k month, but that would be more down to variance in all likelihood. On 200k, it's reversed. Basically, moving up stakes in sports betting doesn't make it significantly more difficult to have a similar ROI. This is not true in poker and it's entirely possible that you will be -EV at a higher level in poker, whereas this is not an issue in sports betting.

Gotcha, Don. Although I do think your underestimating the talent you would encounter these days even starting with a 5k bankroll. Making 3k a month wouldnt be as easy as some would think.

No way. I occasionally head down to a few local spots to play 1/3 or 2/5 NLHE and it's absurdly soft. I'm no great poker player, although I'm competent.

Online full ring at the same limits is tougher than the same limit live, but that should be pretty obvious. HU is still pretty soft online, especially at the lowish limits.

1) How good of a poker player is the person

2) How big is their bankroll (the swings of variance can be a bitch)

3) Table selection

With ya, Don. But I mainly play on line since I live in a state with no casinos. I get away every so often for live play, but not as much as I like. And the local games I play in, its always the same guys and playing the same stakes. We play a little high and dont allow many new people to the game for obvious reasons. I would love to move to Vegas, but have family situations that dont allow me to do it yet.

I played a little 1/3 in Vegas recently. Sickeningly soft. I unfortunately spend 8+ months/year in Colorado which restricts me to online only if I want to play poker.

For me, poker is a hobby that pays for itself. The problem is that many of the sites like to steal your money. I have a complaint filed here againist Jon Wood over stolen money. He use to post at this forum. Now, he won't answer anyone's emails.

I'm with ya, jolub. As I said early, if I could play more live cards, I would. I just dont have the luxury to do that right now. I will say PokerStars and FullTilt have always treated me right.
