the pre-season magazines have turned to crap the past 4 or 5 years imo. i just try to read at sites like bleacherreport.com and cfn.scout.com now to keep up before the season starts.

Phil Steel's mag still condenses a lot of info and keeps it in one place, the other bible is the guide from Blue Ribbon which isn't available until a month before the season. The Blue Ribbon reviews have started appearing on ESPN, but I still like to have them in a book.

I just got done reading 3 different publications'
Phil Steele, Lindy's and Athlon. They are all about the same in the information on each team. Steele dwelt to much in the past saying such things as "We had them pegged for second in 2005". Who cares. I think I liked Lindy's the best because of the way it was laid out. |

I think Phil Steele's is the best for a handicapper, especially the first 4-5 weeks of the season. Also a lot of good historical spread stuff in there...

i just bought that Lindy's mag after hearing about it on here in another thread. I guess i just never heard of it or just always looked past it cause there are like a zillion football mags. for years i had subscriptions to S.I. and T.S.N. so i just looked at theirs. plus since i've been on the internet since 96' (AOL dial-up baby)i've just used it.
Lindy's seemed alright, no worse or better than all the others i have looked at over the years. |

Phil Steele is probably best for fans as well as for gamblers. It's one of the few NCAAF magazines geared toward gamblers. He does a pretty thorough job in covering the teams. Some might argue that he does not spend enough time with the big programs, and too much time with the small programs. However, as a gamblers we know what to think when we hear people make claimis like that.
The one really annoying part of Phil Steele's magazine is his constant references to his past predictions. Nobody really cares what happened he picked 7 years ago.... |

Marc Lawarence is decent. Nice layout with both NFL and NCAAF.

Steele by far.
Especially his regional magazines. 5 for 24 bucks. 6 pages per team, and good recruiting stuff. |

I agree with the above that Phil Steele's and the Blue Ribbon are great preseason reading although both quickly become stale as the season progresses... still, though, no reason not to study during the slowness leading up to this fall... you can get both (or pretty much any other gambling book/publication in print) from the gambler's bookstore in Vegas, which, BTW, is a great stop if anyone hasn't been... you can also order online or over the phone if you're not in town...

I'd recommend these three for handicappers
1. Phil Steele 2. Blue Ribbon 3. Lindy's PS has key trends that come in handy for handicapping during the season. Blue Ribbon is unmatched in their depth (also price at >$20) and inclusion of spring ball reports. Lindy's is just a comfortable read, in bed or on the shitter, and does a good job at breaking down how each conference should shape up. |
