Default can Tiger Woods bench press 350 lbs. ?

I stopped by a friends house to talk to my brother for a minute earlier, the dude was switching channels, i asked to catch the score of the Bos/Cinn game, anyway he then switched it over to golf, Tiger just happened to be getting ready to swing out of some think rough, this commentator said something like "if anyone as the upper body strength to get out of this think rough it's Tiger, he bench presses between 350-400 lbs."
That got us talking about can he do it, we all agreed that we don't think Tiger can bench press more than 300 tops.
I just don't see it, i don't know if that commentator was full of shit, or it is a real stat that he knows.

thoughts?

That's like putting four 45 lb weights on each side of the bar. I have never seen a body builder at my local gym putting that much weight, let alone do more than one rep with two spotters.

Tiger is in very good shape, but I doubt he can bench that much.

No. Golfers don't train maximal strength.

loiuvillekid,

Are you sure the announcers didn't say 350-400 lbs leg press instead. I think he is capable of leg pressing that weight since I do about the same.

Dude is quite muscular. A guy like Shane Mosley, who is 5'9" and 150, benches 350+, and he doesn't train for that either.

I'd vote for YES, he can do it.

Looks like you guys might be right:

http://www.bench-press.net/tiger-woods-bench-press.html

Tiger Woods bench press is reported to be around the 300 pound mark. Tiger has been weight training since he was 21. He keeps his training very private and very few photos have ever been taken on him working out (see below). When asked about his bench press and workouts, Tiger refused to give out any details. Though about a year ago Tiger said his bench was 240+. Tiger's personal trainer estimated Tiger Woods bench press (1 REP MAX) to be around the 300 pound mark.

The 300 pound mark isn't 350 to 400.

I don't think he can do 300. I'd lay money on the under.

we were stunned to when the guy said it, me and my brothers friend were going "did he just say Tiger benches 350-400 lbs.?"
my brother was at the dudes backdoor in the kitchen messing with the dudes girlfriends cat, he heard us talking like "no,way", "and that dude is crazy" shit like that. so thats why we got in a discussion about it.
after reading what was posted above, we were saying the same thing, maybe 300 tops. i think whoever that commentator was, he was just being silly, or had to be.
i don't remember what hole it was, and i don't know anyone who tivo'd it, but we know he said bench press, not leg press, because he was in some thick rough, almost out of bounds it looked like, and the commentator was talking about his upper body strength to be able to hack through it. I remember as we were discussing it they started showing the size of the rough and how it went from 1-1/2 inches and as it got by the tree line it was 5+ inches, which is where Tiger was.
i say it was around 5:30-6:00 eastern time when i stopped over there, so whatever hole he was on then, that is when the comment was made.

Tiger can do 300lbs on bench.

His strong work ethic and weight lifting are some of the things that set him apart from all the guys like Phil running around with man boobs. 300lbs isn't that hard to bench, especially if you train in such a regimented/detailed schedule as Tiger does.

350, would be a stretch. I would want to see more muscle mass on someone who benches 350. Could he maybe do 1 rep at 350...maybe, prob not, but I would definately buy the 300lbs.

Well, I do 275lbs with 8 reps so I guess Tiger doing one rep at 300 is possible. I never tried to do just one rep cause it's stupid. You can't train the muscles doing one rep. You are more likely to tear them.

No way he can do 400 lbs even with 1/2 a rep.

I'll give him 360. I played golf and tennis in high school and I can put up 225 ten times. That's equal to about 300. I'm about 6'0 and 170 lbs. Its called natural strength. Few people have it, but I'd bet tiger has it.

tigers personal trainer has professed that he does bench over 300lb. ..Is it really that hard to believe? Tiger has been weight training fervently since he was 21 which is about 11 years. He weighs around 190. I weigh 165 and i put up 350 without too much trouble. The guy is an athlete i wouldn't doubt him.

300 isn't that much for an athlete that trains consistently, Tiger doesn't look like he could from seeing him on tv...but maybe he is bigger then what he seems.

I remember hearing this about him a few years ago, and thinking they prob meant on one of those gay bench machines, not free weights...

but sounds like they are just estimating his one rep max, from what he reps out with using a converter.....and then adding 50 pounds more on there

but

The carryover from a 1RM Bench to the golf swing is minimal at best. Golfers do not train for maximal strength, especially in the lying bench press. And for sure, do not spend any time on improving 1RM bench technique.

I max at about 330 and I only weigh 195 lbs and am very far from being a professional athlete. Tiger's a big dude and he's ripped...it comes down to his arm length I guess, the longer the arms the harder it is to bench. I say he can hit 350.

Thanks Fazzy. I new that a PT would know how to answer best this question.

When you say someone bench presses a certain amount is this the maximum it can lift for one rep or does it have to have a minimum number of reps to qualify as his max lift?

Thanks pal.
