Hi all, I just bought a very nice new computer with 1024MB RAM, a dual core processor and a very expensive graphics card, however i have noticed that when i run demanding applications at the same time such as pinnacle's dynamic line display along with mansion's exchange and the don best screen that on occasion it slows my comp and sometimes even freezes it, also it sometimes takes a very long time after i make a bet for the confirm page to load. I was just wondering if this is normal and if not is there any troublshooting i can do to my comp to improve performance, also if anyone can tell me what is actually important in a computer with regard to running applications like this i would be very grateful, thx.

I would say you need more RAM. But programs like Don Best take up so many resources they really should be run on a seperate computer. Also is of course possible you have spyware issue. For a dual core processor am surprised they didn't recommend more RAM, RAM is huge for the issues you mention. You also should try to get as many background programs that you don't need off your computer.

oh, also could you be more specific as to what you mean by "backround programs"? thx

anything running in the background. Like chat clients, anything in your system tray that might preload things. You can check what runs at startup by going to Start > Run > type msconfig > Startup tab. YOu don't want to just go unclicking things, but you can do google searches to see what you need and what you might be able to get rid of. Like I have iTunesHelper running and I have never even used itunes.

But I agree I think RAM is your key issue, do another 1gb and you should be fine.

Jeez, I run a 2.3 GHz PC with 256MB RAM and I can still run 8+ Firefox tabs, my tracking spreadsheet and streaming MLB without any loss in performance.

tacomax some people have everything perfect and can get away with that, I certainly wouldn't be quick to upgrade given the performance you are getting. But if you throw on Don Best I bet you would be struggling.

I have used six computers in that past two years including three now, so just my own experience. For the processor ihaiha has, the ram is certainly not up to that standard IMO.

I'm not much more qualified than Mud to talk techie but it sounds like a difference between running an application and basic web-based feeds. Local app versus on the server?

This is a good thread for me to. My home computer is old and just have the Dsl connect. If I only have $1000 to spend on a new computer is that enough to get a good new one? That is what my tax rebait is going to be about. I see these photo s of the book places and there using 2 or 3 monitors. That seem to be to expensive for me right now.

El Guapo, depending how old your computer is, yes, $1000 is probably plenty. In fact, if your computer is 4-5 years old or older, even spending $300-400 on a new desktop will be a MAJOR upgrade that you won't regret. And you'll have plenty left over for multiple monitors! Those flat panels are expensive, though.
