Technically - it is the dirtiest. Reader's digest did a study of the 50 largest US cities in 2004. They studied air quality, water quality, toxins, hazardous waste, and sanitation.

Chicago was FILTHY in every category, and when averaged, came out to be the dirtiest.

    The cleanest? Portland.

I was in and out of Chi as a kid, in the sales game. Early 70s thru mid-70s. I think Daley was still mayor.

I remember it as a very clean city, much more so than New York was at that time.

I recall remarking to a friend how litter free the downtown streets were. 'Course, in that era we didn't hear much about pollution and the like.

Daley may have been an old time political boss, but he did keep a clean city. (Isn't his son still the mayor? Or is that hisg grandson?)

I've only been to Chicago once and that was in 1996. Over all I found it to be a very clean, safe city. My one complaint was it was a very expensive city. I travel a lot and paid far more for hotels, dinners, drinks there than most places. Oh ya and hooters stopped serving me, and kicked me out, another downside.

Chicago is a little to cold for me but is a great city. If it was a little more south it would be the best city in the United States. That being said its just like any other big city. You go to Hawthorne Race Course in Cicero and its not the best looking area. But if you go to Arlington Park its beautiful. Havent been up north where the naval base and six flags are located. But I would imagine it gets nicer going north.

Chicago is the worst of the worst. For the law abiding citizen, you can barely own any kind of a weapon to fend off and protect yourself from the dysfunctional, welfare state-great society-new deal ferrell people that the democratic machine cultivated and nurtured

Who in their right mind would live there if they don't have to?

All of your limousine liberals like Oprah and Obama live on the gold coast in their ivory towers with armed security guards far from the wretched stink they believe in and helped create. They probably have helliports on their roofs so they don't even have to drive a limousine to get to the airport to their private jet.Why would they risk driving through the sesspool of dysfunction they created.

I wonder if Obama did a Clinton and Gore hypocrasy where he says he's in total support of public education but sends his kids to a private school where they won't get 11 kinds of dog crap beat out of them.

John Daly the golferwould have been more of an on the level, role model upstanding citizen mayor than any of the Daley's that were mayor.hehe!

P.S.I say all this from experience because I have a ton of relatives that live there. As a kid I thought the big city was cool but after hearing about all the rapes, murders, car jackings etc.that took place in their once decent neighborhoods,I knew it long had since gone to hell in a handbasket. The only thing there is that there wouldn't be any webbing left on the handbasket because it would have been cut off of it.

The politicians and unions in Chicago wanted Wal Mart banned from entering the city so that all the people on food stamps could get ripped off shopping at street corner convenience stores. At least Wal Mart wanted to invest their own money while at the same time this was going on,Jesse Jackson's piss poor kids were being given city grants and property to build their gifted-shakedown Budweiser distributorship.

I get WGN on tv and the only good thing about their newscast is meteorologist Tom Skilling. The news is so depressing! The sports goes something like this,,,Authorities found the dismembered torso gagged and bound in the Chicago River,,,we will be right back after this break for more sports.

Don't let them kid you, they dye the river green on Saint Pat's Day not to add to the ambiance,it's to rid the river of the year of blood shed coloring the river red.

When the Bear's Tank Johnson got in all that trouble for gun ownership he probably would have been in total compliance of the law if he would have lived in a normal city and state other than Chicago,Illinois.I hear that 80% of the land mass population in Illinois is great but they despise the fact that Chicago calls the shots for the whole state.

I know this sweetest, single, hard working, law abiding citizen gal in Rockford,Illinois that owns a little fixer upper one bedroom starter house and when she told me how much she paid in property taxes I almost blew my lunch. It was more than most people in fly over country pay in rent for a year.I asked her why it was so high and she said it was for bussing kids of different nationalities''forced diversity'' in education.

umm 5 star bomb doesn't even live in Chicago if I remember correctly, thought he lived in the suburbs like Naperville or something.

FWIW I lived in Chicago summer of '06. Would live there again in a heartbeat.

Nothing beats Chicago in the summer. They have some of the best fests in the world like Taste of Chicago and Blues Fest. You mix that with great beaches and multiple concert venues and you can't beat it.

I have been to both Chicago and Portland... Portland is by FAR cleaner and has just as much to offer as Chicago...

I have friends though that have moved from Toledo to Chicago (most were from Cleveland to start with) and they love it there.... All of them actually live in the city itself but aspire to buy a perminate place in the suburbs... My question is if Chicago is that good then why the suburbs..? That's not Chicago that's the suburbs...

I think first and second teer cities are all garbage when you consider everything overall... The cost of living is higher and the quality of life is lower... The fact that there is a good sport team at one city over another is just not an important factor... It may help the local economy and I know this is a hard concept to understand but money is not everything....

Never said Chicago was clean, I'd expect any place in the northwest to be significantly cleaner.

If you can buy a place in the city when you're younger, more power to you, better than throwing money away on inflated rent prices that are the staple of any major city. Price to be paid for living in the middle of it all. Find it more and more wearisome by the month paying high rent to live in a major city. Fortunately/Unfortunately I work in the city so it doesn't make much sense living outside of it.
