Best player or athlete? So far Lebron could be both. He's a freak athlete and arguably the best player in the NBA. Kobe is probably equal to Lebron or better in this debate because he does have titles and a very successful career thus far. Those are my two--both from Basketball. What other sports allow high schoolers to become pro straight-away? Tennis? Golf? I'm very unfamiliar with those sports. Haven't there been some extremely successful Olympic athletes coming straight from HS?

EDIT: Whoops, I misread and missed that it was from your own HS. My fault =) I don't have anyone, though I heard there was a kid playing LB at UMichigan a few years ago from my school. From a neighboring HS there was a kid who went to Indiana for Basketball during the Knight days, but he had an injury that ended his career if I remember correctly.

When I was attending St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys in Baltimore, there was a kid named George Ruth who was an excellent baseball player. I wonder whatever became of him

Actually, the best athlete that I ever competed against growing up was probably Mark Murphy. His dad got transferred out of Houston just before Mark started high school, and he went on to Colgate and then was a Pro Bowl safety for the Redskins back in the late-70s, early 80s.

Dave Elmendorf came out of my high school before I got there. He was an All-American in baseball at Texas A&M in addition to playing football -- had a key INT in the '68 Cotton Bowl win over 'Bama. Got drafted by both the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Rams, ended up playing in the NFL for 8-10 years.

Otherwise, Stockar and Jerome McDougle are the best we got ;(

Brent got the boot from UT. We don't need lazy non-athletes on our campus.

Schaeffer started his college career at the University of Tennessee, where he became the first true freshman QB to start a season opener for an SEC team since Georgia's John Rauch in 1945. However, Schaeffer was dismissed from the Volunteers squad and forced to withdraw from the university after several on-campus incidents, the most notable being him captured on a security camera at the North Carrick dormitory assaulting another student with a weapon.
Down right unfriendly. Not surprised to find out that you had a major influence in his life. Please stay away from future vol recruits.

no one anyone has heard of, there may have been some in the past 10 years, but i don't read the Pioneer News paper anymore, if they ain't in the Courier-Journal(Louisville) paper, they ain't doing much.
2 that come to mind is Kirk Greathouse, he could hoop, dude had mad hops. took my old school to a top 20 ranking in state.

and Jerome Hoosier, i remember Oak Hill Academy did a tour through Ky. and played a bunch of top schools, Bullitt Central was not one of them, but somehow they played them, BC lost by the lowest margin against them vs. the states other top schools , Oak Hill was loaded with all kinds of Div-1 signees, BC cut the lead to like 4-5 in the 4th Q. and Oak Hill put their best back on the floor and pulled it out.
I also remember watching Jerome go toe-to-toe with Derrik Anderson in the King of the Bluegrass tour. one year, they just traded shot for shot, 3 for 3 , dunk for dunk, Anderson's Doss high school ended up winning in D-OT.

    Default 2 here.

One was Bernie Kukar who would have graduated from high school in the later 50's.He was an NFL ref right up until recently and officiated quite a few super bowl games. He was small but he excelled in any sport he played.Supposedly,Vegas insiders always rated him the best in the game for awhile.

2-was Mark Pavelich who was on the 1980 mirracle on ice olympic hockey team.He played for the Rangers after that.

There were so many others but I figure it would take too long and would include guys from too far back in time like Frank Brimsek who is an NHL hall of famer goalie they called Mr. Zero.
