I heard something similar about porn recently. Apparently studies have shown that using porn actually diminishes your desire for sex. What do you think that U2 song "Even Better Than The Real Thing" is about anyway? I didn't know until I saw the obvious porn references in the music video:

constantly checking the lines to see if anything moved/changed, even if you don't plan on betting that day.

Watching hot porn women makes me want to have more sex. I question the study.

Lot of signs to be weary of:

    1) Obsession with sports/teams/leagues you never once followed
    2) Inordinate amount of time on the computer/television
    3) Volatile mood swings
    4) Loss of interest in other hobbies and families/friends
    5) Urge to chase losses
    6) Desire to consistently bet more games and more money
    7) You plan well ahead of time your next "betting adventure"
    8) Inability to successfully complete other aspects of your professional life (i.e. school, career, family obligations, etc...)
    9) Sleep loss during rough stretches of gambling
    10) Lack of development in others areas of life (i.e. physical, cognitively, emotionally, spiritually, socially, intellectually, culturally, etc...) because you are consistently watching and thinking about sports.
    11) Weak sexual urges and desires and instead more reliance on sexual imagery (i.e. pornography) to stimulate yourself
    12) More internet forum friends than real life friends/gaming forum replaces real life community

    Many others.....

JJ Gold is my best friend and I've never even spoken to the guy. What does this say about me, am I a gambling addict?

I never said I was not a compulsive gambler, I guess my hidden message here is that it is controlling most of our lives and we cannot stop.

boys, i swear to GOD, this is all true what i will say..

I hav refused sex with girlfriends and ladies just to watch my game.

i have refused dates on sat nights knowing i was going to get laid that night but didn't want to leave the house because of bets.

friends call me up sat night to tell me big party full of women, i always say, i am not feeling well, so i can watch the games and bet.

brother invites me to his house every sunday for bbq and see my nephew. i always make excuse why i can't go.. just to bet of course.

nephew wants me to go see his soccer game and i have only been once.. i make up excuse i am busy at 630 pm so i can bet and watch games.

i never answer the phone anymore when anybody calls, so i am not disturbed.

i quit going to gym because gambling takes my mind off everything.

A friend of mine always invites me to Dodger games, box seats, and i never go because i need to be in front of pc for scores and put in bets.

Friends invite me to sushi restaurants all you can eat and they are paying, and i always make excuses i am busy.. i dont want to leave house so i can be in front of pc for scores, forums and watch games. and bet..

I leave the house 2x a week just because i have to, to buy food. then i come straight back..

there are many many more i can say, but this is just a few.. it's a sad life.. a very sad life.

i swear to god, i am really thinking of getting out of this shit and go live my life because the years are going by fast and i am wasting them. these are the prime years of my life and i am just throwing it away... very sad..

All was fine till I read this bolded part. Nicky, you are a sick phuck if you are allowing gambling to interfere with your sushi eating opportunities. Seek help, pal. JJ, mo and I will pray for you this Sunday at mass.

Excluding #5, I truly wonder what society's take is on a person who meets these requirements but is a "true" advantage player. I mean the real high rollers who bring it in year after year.

The visual I get is a guy who bets 100 large a night at near fully Kelly (say 1-5% of his bankroll per individual bet) and brings in an average of $4000 profit a day. He goes to his first GA meeting and explains all of the 12 points above apply to him (excluding #5 because he controls his betting and never over stakes) and that he brings in $120,000 a month and that the amount has been growing steadily for the last 10 years as he continues to reinvest. I can see the reformed gambler group leader (I don't know their official name) whose last bet in his life was on Secretariat asking if he should take the Lakers and the points tonight. If you are a "real" winner, isn't it just business?

I have known a couple of wealthy business types in the past who are really into their work and although I do not know what their personal lives were actually like, it wouldn't surprise me if they had many of the same 12 requirements as listed above.

I guess what I am asking is: Is gambling a problem if you win?

Again, I don't mean the windfall type gambler that has a lucky week or even a lucky year. I mean the true advantage player. What do you think?

    video,

winning or losing has nothing to do with being a compulsive gambler. even if you win 100k a yr, or 300k a yr, if you sit home all day and look at the screen and don't leave the house, you are a sick man..

if you lose every yr but you are out of the house all day living a good life and seeing the world, you don't have a problem of a compulsive gambler..

it all depends how much you get out, whether you win or lose. i sit home all day and just study lines and shop around and look at a screen, and even if i would win every yr, i would still be a loser for not getting out. my whole life revolves around gambling, and it's sad. I need to get out more. winning or losing has NOTHING to do with this.

well a compulsive gambler would be someone like nicky is explaining sitting at home, no social life ect....you cross over that line when you start losing your ass off and continue to gamble and sit at home...thats when you become a degenerate gambler

there is a difference between compulsive gambler and degenerate gambler

the difference whether you have money.

crazy is used to describe poor people.
    rich people is called eccentric.

Nicky says it best, it is when gambling takes over your life whether you win or lose and that goes for most here.
