the worst call you have ever seen
i'm curious what everyone recalls as the worst call ever made by a ref or an ump.
i gotta say the 1985 Don Denkinger call he made at first base as the worst i've ever seen. that call cost the cardnails the world series that year.

Did it really cost the Cardinals the World Series? It was only a bad call to put a single runner on 1st base. Admittedly it was the bottom of the 9th, but a series of mistakes by the Cardinals in that inning threw the game away.
I think it was the last game where they were spanked 11-0 which lost them the World Series. Having said that, I think that having Denkinger on the plate in that game was a very poor call by the powers that be.

Get outta here with your logic. Let us Cards fans have our scapegoat.

Nothing much comes to mind for me on this except that overturned Polamolu interception in the Indy-Pitt game, probably just because it is fresh in my mind. That was particularly bad because they studied the replay and still managed to butcher it. But ultimately it didn't make much difference so it's hard to say it's the worst call of all time.
I keep getting this mental image of the last pitch of Don Larsen's World Series perfect game. It was a called third strike and pretty far outside. But again, it would be a major stretch to say it was the worst call of all time. It just popped to mind.

The recent worse call Ive seen was by a player not a official.
Reggie Bush in the Rose Bowl on that long run and around the 20 of Texas he tries to lateral it back and fumbles it over to Texas. That had to be the biggest bone head call anyone could make.
I did like it though, as I had Texas pretty healthly.

Speaking of National title didn't Tim Brown or the rocket Ismail return a kickoff in the last seconds of Colorado Buffs and Notre Dame Irish title game for a touchdown, only to be called back in the last seconds because of a holding call? Now that was a major call

Oh I remember that, in Detroit.
What about the time when Marty Morningweg for the Lions choose to kickoff in OT rather then receive against the Bears. That was a bone head move as well.

heres another one that missouri was involved in. this time it was against nebraska.
the refs blew a call on a TD catch with about 40 seconds left giving nebraska a win in that game. then they ended up winning the ncaa championship that year.
im thinking it was like 1997 range

hands down, worst ever call: .4 seconds left in the game, Derek Fisher catches the inbounds pass in mid-air, lands with his back to the basket, turns, elevates and shoots to hit a game-winner against the Spurs in the playoffs in 2004.......i'm still waiting for the game-clock to start on that deal. the digitized Zapruder frame-by-frame breakdown commissioned by the CIA clearly shows that there was only one rifle/shooter......MY ASS!

1980 NLCS, Game 4, 4th inning......Phillies had Bake McBride on 2nd and Manny Trillo on 1st with no outs. Garry Maddox hits low shot back up the middle that Astros pitcher Vern Ruhle catches shoe-high. Both runners are off and running. Ruhle throws to Art Howe at 1B, doubling Trillo off and Howe throws to Rafael Landestoy at 2B to apparently double McBride off. Should've been a triple play.
Phillies challenge that Ruhle didn't catch the ball before it hit ground, the umpires conference and decide it was a catch and Trillo was doubled off 1B, yet they allow McBride to remain at 2B. Phillies don't score in inning of what was then a 0-0 game. Replays show Ruhle made the catch and it should've been a triple play. The fact that Jerry Crawford and Bruce 'Fat Eff' Froemming are involved in the decision shouldn't surprise anyone.\
EDIT: Same game, bottom of 6th, umps give Phillies a doubleplay ruling Gary Woods left 3B too early on a sac fly to right. Crawford is again involved in the decision despite being the 2B umpire in this game. The sorry bastard!

The pine tar call was, technically, the correct call. It was only later reversed due to being 'not in the spirit of the rules' or some crapola like that.

Maybe the 1998 NBA Finals when Michael Jordan shoved Bryan Russell to the ground before hitting the game-winning shot. I guess that's just star treatment, but you would think the refs have to blow the whistle on something so obvious at that point.
Same series, but not as easily remembered: Scottie Pippen appeared to have a breakaway, and was (miraculously) caught from behind by Greg Ostertag. Ostertag cleanly blocked his shot, but the officials not only called a foul, they called a flagrant.

I can't remember the year, but Don Makowski of the Packers was like 7 yards past the line of scrimmage and the refs let the play stand for what proved to be the game winning score.
