Default Off topic - my excellent adventure

Well guys, I'm off to California on Thursday to take the qualifying test for Jeopardy.

Why did I arrange it for the first day of NFL? I dunno. I guess I'm just a big palooka. Sometimes you just have to take what you can get.

I am setting the odds at

    Qualifies: -300
    Fails to qualify: +250

I'm pretty confident because I took the test once before and qualified. (You have to get 35 or better on a 50 question test.) That means your name goes into a pool of qualifiers and you are eligible to be called to the actual show for a 1 year period - although there are no guarantees. But I also have some concern because I was quite a bit better prepared back then in terms of brushing up on my Shakespeare and explorers and artists and chemistry and on and on.

I've been so busy with baseball the last month that I haven't had much time for random studying. But I'm going to give 'er my best shot!

So that is my excellent adventure.

I tried out for Jeopardy once, but it was only a 10 question thing and we had to get 9 or 10 to move on. Or was that just the first step?

When I did it around 2000, it was a 50 question test. The questions were shown on a monitor and read by Johnny Gilbert. We wrote our answers on a sheet they gave us.

I think we had 8 seconds per question. If you get 35 or more out of 50 you have qualified. 9 out of 75 qualified in my group. They didn't tell us our scores, just aye or nay. I felt like I qualified pretty comfortably but I'll never know for sure.

They then put you in a mock game with actual buzzers and also have a brief interview (real short - one quick question - like they do on the show). I guess they want to evaluate what kind of a player you are and if you keep the game moving along and if you smile and speak clearly and all that.

That all probably goes into their decision on who gets the call.

Maybe instead of my real name, I'll just sign in at my podium as Mudcat.

    Isn't your real name Mudcat?

Anyway....best of luck Mudcat. To go on Jeopardy would be a great accomplishment although you'll have to figure out what to tell them when Alex asks you what exactly it is you do.

That would really be somthing if they had catgories like Gaming Industry or Arbing for $400 please Alex.

Hopefully you wont have the same type of run as Ken Jennings...we need you here pal!

I will need an answer for that on Thursday. I'm leaning towards freelance sportswriter.

It's far from a complete answer but I guess it's not an outright lie.

I have a good feeling about it. Jeopardy likes to have diverse contestants and, last time I qualified, it was at a special Toronto contestant search so that year they had a whole bunch of Torontonians to choose from if they wanted to mix in a foreigner.

Now, they have to call me.

    Well it's a theory.

I'll tell you this though; the sameday Toronto-to-L.A.-to-Toronto commute is not something I recommend for anyone.
