Default Why Won't Myanmar Allow Aid Workers In?

One guess: it's a closed society, and they're afraid that countries like the US, Britian, etc will send in spies with the real aid workers.

As well as planting sophisticated electronic listening devices, recruiting spies, and in general plotting agaisnt the junta that rules the country.

And I suspect they are correct in that assessment.

Because they are fukking assholes. The people need the help, but the government's isolationist position has prevailed. Fukking cokksuckers. I just wish I could have the leaders of Mynamar, along with Muslim extremist leaders, together in a room. I have a baseball bat and they are handcuffed. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with these numbskulls.

Id guess the Govt officials there must really have something to hide from the rest of the world. Maybe mass graves from an un-reported genocide, that would be my guess. Then again, next week after the elections there are held, all the aid will be let in, JMO.

No, I don't think the citizens would turn away help, but I just don't care. Plain and simple. Let some other country go help, why does it always have to be us.

I don't really care either. Nobody gave a shit, now they see some dead bodies of people they don't know and start to go all foreign aid worker on people. I'd rather take care of problems at home 1st.

The US is all running to try and play hero again for no reason. If we were devestated by the same type of thing, would these people help the United States? Did they help during 9/11? Katrina? Nope. 38 tons of food turned away by the jerkoff they/their parents/grandparents let into office. Sometimes bad choices bite you in the ass.

The US has contributed the same as the UK to Burma (Myanmar). Hardly the dominant player you're making them out to be when you consider that the UK is smaller than many US states.

Europe as a whole is playing a much more significant role than the US.

Also the posts here are wildly uninformed. The US accepted quite a bit of foreign aid during Katrina.

This thread could answer the question "Why does the world hate America" quite succinctly. Pure arrogance.

Take care of home before you take care of the world we find it neccesary to help everyone everywhere quite the wrong path, the world hates the US in reality because we butt in everyone's buisiness not because we are stingy in humaitarian efforts I bet switzerland sent 0 aid but guess what the world is fine with them because they mind their own damn buisiness

You really have no Christian ideals, do you?

    "Who cares?"

I hate the saying "walk a mile in my shoes", but --- what if this were a poor country --- and a hurricane hit. What if no one had helped the victims of Katrina?

If you were in their position, I'm sure you wouldn't be saying "who cares?"

These are human beings, man. No one can control the life they are born into. Consider yourself lucky that you aren't relying on aid that is being turned away from you.

My hunch is that it's like letting government social workers into your house here for a certain problem, they find what they perceive to be other problems and take over your life.

The only thing is,over there there probably are real problems instead of invented ones with the way the government treats the people and they want to keep outside governments from seeing it in fear of the powers at be there losing their power.

What I don't get is this: I doubt the Myanmar govt has much of an air force, and likely very little or no anti-aircraft defenses in the hard-hit delta area.

So why don't some of these relief agencies fly parcels in, flying low to avoid radar and parachute them to the ground? Like water, food, basic medicine? Not as effecient as professionals on the ground, but a helluva lot better than nothing.

The big aid organizations may not want to do it so as not to piss the Myanmar govt, but there are lots of private pilots who would love the chance to help out.

    Default Burma accepts help

    Burma accepts help
    Article from: Sunday Herald Sun

    May 11, 2008 12:00am

BURMA'S military government has changed its position on aid, saying it will accept help "from any quarter".

The response follows intense criticism over its response to last week's cyclone disaster.

"Myanmar (Burma) intends to cooperate with the international community to address this great challenge and will accept aid from any quarter," UN Ambassador Kyaw Tint Swe said.

"We urgently need medical supplies, food, clothing, electricity generators and material for emergency shelter as well as financial assistance."

He said two ships and 11 planes carrying aid had so far arrived in Burma, as the UN struggled to coordinate with military rulers to distribute aid to the needy.

Hundreds of aid workers including Australians were waiting to enter Burma yesterday but were not being granted visas by the Burmese Government.

World Vision chief Tim Costello said roads to some areas were open but painfully slow.

"What really concerns us is the number of people unaccounted for," he said. "We've had World Vision staff in tears because they can't get to everyone."

Cyclone Nargis ravaged southern parts of Burma last Saturday, killing as many as 100,000 and sparking fears of disease and starvation.

The UN has appealed for about $200 million in funds to help the more than 1.5 million people left homeless. But Burma's junta is allowing in aid and rescue workers in dribs and drabs.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has warned that survivors would be at risk if the junta refused international aid.

The hold up was that the aid boxes didnt have the ruling generals names on the boxes. Thats why they were confiscating the aid that arrived, so that they could change the names on the aid boxes before giving them to the population. Im not kidding about this either.
