Cherry joining ESPN for Eastern Conference, Stanley Cup finals

Cherry, a fixture on the CBC's "Hockey Night in Canada," will join ESPN's "SportsCenter" beginning Friday after Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers.


"Pairing Don Cherry and Barry Melrose will provide NHL fans with two of the most respected and opinionated voices in hockey today," Norby Williamson, ESPN executive vice president of production, said in a statement. "'SportsCenter' will be the place to turn for Stanley Cup analysis, debate and highlights."

Cherry will offer live postgame reports on-site during the conference finals, and he will join Melrose and ESPN's Steve Levy for pre- and postgame analysis during the Stanley Cup finals. Cherry will also appear on ESPNEWS and ESPN Radio and will continue his work for the CBC during the playoffs.

Cherry will donate his ESPN fee to the Humane Society.

Cherry coached the Boston Bruins in the 1970s, leading the team to the Stanley Cup finals twice, before ending his career after one season with the Colorado Rockies (1979-80). He spent many years playing professional hockey, mostly in the AHL, and played in one playoff game for the Bruins in 1955. He has worked for the CBC since 1980.

I watched Grapes Cherry from the time I was a kid either coaching or doing his segment on CBC hockey night in Canada.In the last few years since I switched to satellite I haven't seen much of him.

When I drove through Hamilton,Ontario way back in 87 I saw him at one of his bar-grills and he couldn't have been nicer.A month after I got home I wrote to him asking for more autographs and he sent me a bunch of them with him and his dog ''Boston Terrier ''Blue,in the photo.

The guy seems course and gruff on the outside but he has a heart of gold and a soft heart at that.The guy on occassion breaks down and cries on his segment when he talks about helping kids with severe injuries,deaths.etc.I guess he does alot of nice things for people on an individual case basis.

He almost got canned by CBC when he went balistic on a hockey coach in Canada that mollested his players.All the guys in prison were watching and wanted to whack the guy they were in stir with and it nearly caused a riot.CBC backed down when they were petitioned to keep Cherry.

I think Cherry could win the prime minister post in Canada if he ran for office.

Heres the thing, Don Cherry is a moron. He makes some valid point here or there about no touch icing etc... But when he starts crying becuase some soldier died, or when he starts slagging off european and french players, i want to puke. To think my tax dollars go to paying this idiot's salary is sickening.
