Pretty sharp guy on baseball... Always wondered if he bet on it

I wonder that about the sabermetric community in general. These guys put a ton of effort into analyzing baseball and you know it must occur to them that they could make much more money betting on games than selling a few books to a niche market.

The subject is definitely taboo to these guys, though. Every now and then someone will mention handicapping in a sabermetrics mailing list and they will either get a hostile response or no response at all.

Personally, I think a significant number of these guys have at least dabbled in betting. Most of them, however, hope to land a nice job with a MLB team and the last thing they want is to be in any way linked to sports betting.

I am sure most of them have set up secret online offshore accounts under their wife's name or a friend's name.

I can't imagine being that dorky to be interested in the statistics of baseball and not apply it to something practical like sports betting. The whole idea of betting is to be able to make accurate predictions.
