Default New format for final table in WSOP ME

I don't like this at all. I can think of numerous problems that might occur from waiting four months to play the final table.

WSOP Main Event Final Table Moved to November

Final Nine Players Will Play Down to a Winner Nov. 9-10 Instead of July 16
The World Series of Poker today officially announced that the final table of the 2008 main event will not compete on July 16 as originally scheduled but, instead, the players will reconvene Nov. 9-10.
The idea behind the change is to create more buzz, and, according to Jeffrey Pollack, the Commissioner of the WSOP, this will allow fans and viewers to ask “who will win” instead of seeing “who won.”
The rest of the 2008 WSOP schedule will remain the same. Further details on this and more are going to be relayed to Card Player via a conference call later today. Check back in at CardPlayer.com later, as more information will be posted.

That is so incredibly dumb, I can't imagine that any player is truly in favor of this.

this is awful and a horrible move. you get a feel how the people around you have been playing the last day or so then have to wait 4 months to see them again when they may read 11 poker books which change their style.

plus, what if someone dies in those 4 months...just a dumb idea all around

Maybe if Doyle makes it and passes away between then he can leave his seat to his son in his will.

I'm sure you can watch it live on PPV as in the past but there will be no hole cards shown if the past is any indication. All the tournaments you watch now are all recordings anyways.

It was shown live on PPV last year for a small fee, but there wasn't any hole card cameras and the quality was trashy. Even though the ESPN one cuts out so many hands because of time constraints it's so much better production wise since they can post edit.

how many people are actually going to ask "who will win?!?!" and create buzz, no one will give a shit, especially if its a group of no-names. It will be a forgotten cause come august, much less november.

The previous episodes from the main event will have already aired before the final table plays, meaning the final table players will be able to study video of their opponents prior to the last day. Not to mention the ample time to seek advanced coaching.

I'd have to agree that it is a strange decision to chose the largest money event in the world to experiment with such a radical format.

Must be nice to hold on to millions for an extra 4 months.

Maybe it's an indicator that the poker buzz is finally starting to subside. I don't follow the scene much anymore and rarely play online these days, but I don't hear about it as much. College kids are finding other ways to spend their time perhaps.

To the poster who said what's the excitement if we wait 4 months to see no names play, that's the whole idea in a way. With this extra time they can do their little interviews, try to personalize each player and build a favorite/underdog public perception wise.

I think you've probably got it exactly right.

    !!!

You're right. How many millions will they be holding? 50-60 million? At 6% interest, that's one million dollars free and clear for nothing. I hope they are at least comping the final table free private flights, deluxe rooms and the 5 star treatment for any guests they want to bring.

First, from what was discussed last year Harrah's made like a million a day off the various tourneys, sats, cash games, etc a day... I doubt the the interest on the final table money for 4 months had little to do with the discussion that lead to this decision... (I'm wouldn't be suprised if the gaming commission didn't require them to keep the money in cash until it was paid anyhow)

Sounds like a good idea to me, if you know who's going to win the final table is much less interesting. Prior to 2003 no one would go on the internet and lookup who won now as soon as it's over everyone knows the winner, so essentially it was like watching it live prior to 04' b/c no one cared enough to find out in advance. This brings back the element of surprise, I mean think of how much fun it was watching Farha and Moneymaker heads up and the "biggest bluff of the century" and I honestly had no idea if Farha was going to call or not. If you've been told 4 months in advance that Moneymaker wins the WSOP ME then you know Farha's gonna fold. Great idea ESPN, even though poker is complete BS luck at least this'll make it more interesting seeing which degen gets the best cards.

I never said that was their decision, only it must be nice to hold millions for that long. Plus they get most of it months before the tourney even starts.
