In that piece alone he says part of the reason he bet "Yes" was that it would be fun to root for. He's pretty much your ultimate square, although there is anything wrong with betting for entertainment purposes. However, he's still a terrible bettor in the sense of expectation.

If your max bet is $150, I fail to see why you won't take this for $100. +150 on a greater than 50% shot? Half kelly on that on a $1500 bankroll is still over $100.
