I always thought that there was too much shiftyness and uncertainty in the card and sports memorabilia market so I never got into it.It's absolute bonkers when people stand in line for a whole day to assure themselves of getting a team giveaway bobblehead doll.Something is only worth what a person is willing to buy it for.Buying sports junk reminds me of watching The Price is Right where you win a suggested retail price car for 25 grand that you can get at your local dealer for under 20 if you haggle with them.

Is the sports card and memorabilia market even that hot anymore or has it fizzled out?I think outfits like Topps can't be trusted as to how many cards they produce to flood the market with in the past 25 or 30 years.Then when you buy autographed stuff,it's probably a Wade Boggs deal where the bat boy signed it.

So has anyone here sold a sports collection lock,stock and barrel in order to fund their gambling habit?Were you in a hurry to get the money where you kicked yourself in the rear because you discovered there were higher bidders out there online and such?

Has anyone ever read about the tulip bulb crash in Holland 100's of years ago where people sold their houses for a few unique tulip bulbs later to find out that down the road no one wanted the tulips anymore.Reminds me of the sports collectible biz.

I've done just the opposite recently, taken money I was going to play poker with and purchased some stuff plus a few raffle tickets for a charity function that included baseball memorabilia.

3. Economy

Trading cards are done forever, new generation of kids (drugs, sex, drinking, sleeeping)


Lionel trains are big sellers still, sold my colection for 5 dimes but of course lost it all

I had a whole bunch of wheaties boxes that I finally threw out after looking at some prices... I also had a closet full of cards for the 90s that sit at my parents house for like ten years before I pitched them in a dumpster after I took a quick glance through them and at prices on ebay... I called a local card shop here to see if knew some charity or something to give them to and he basically told me that most charities don't take crap and to pitch them... so I did...

No but in high school I once did sell a '55 Roy Campanella for 20 bucks because my selfish ayn rand-reading actress bitch GF at the time wanted to see a movie. I was embarrassingly whipped. I sold it to a card shop, no less, so of course I got a fraction of its real value at the time.

Wrong! Modern card industry is done. I am a high end psa and sgc dealer. I have never sold off cards to gamble. However I did sell 45k worth last year to do some remodeling on my new house. There are way to many high end collectors out there. Anyone thinks that the card industry is done has no clue. If you want to see some figures check this out. I am a high bidder in 9 lots right now. Total of over 100k and I am sure I will not win 1!

1970- to present is good firewood in my opinion. I deal in 1886-1949.

I myself had tons of that garbage.
