Been watching it since its premiere. Best reality show on TV.
It may seem like easy way to bag $40k for just two weeks at sea but after seeing people fall in and die, I wouldn't risk it. Plus couple of new greenhorns tried it and wanted to quit. One even threatened to jump ship if he weren't returned to port. He was probably the only black guy on the show. |

Those guys make around 120k a year and are gone 8 months. I'm not sure how good of a trade off that is...

I love that show also... Don't know why but that is the only show that I watch every week when it is on. My favorite boat is the Cornelia Marie... Phil is the captain he is mean to his sons on the show.

Kind of commercial now and not as risky as it looks, no way camera guys would be on the ship if it was deadly. How many guys die each trip out there? A lot of screaming and stuff for cameras.

for however many seasons Discovery wants to keep doing this show.
I record it every week even if i know i'm going to be watching it. the show is an addiction, it just amazes me what they will go through for some cash. i have watched this show since the beginning. some posters above have talked about the money. i did finally hear someone mention this season(i think it was Jonathans son on the Time Bandit), that you could make 120,000 but you would be out at sea 8-9 months out of the year. i have heard Sig and Edgar Hansen on talk shows mention that most avg. around 100-150 grand, but they themselves have mentioned being gone for 11 months to sometimes 13 months at a time. from what i have gathered about the greenhorns is they don't make crap, like maybe 300-400 a week. you have to be vested in the boat and be a full deckhand to get a full share. i remember in season 1, Sig from the Northwestern had a young dude they picked up, he was some college kid that came up there to make a little money for college, i remember Edgar saying something about he would only make about a grand for the couple weeks, but the dude did so good, that all the fullshare deckhands voted to give him a % of their share, i don't know what dude ended up with, but he was only on that first season, i guess he made his little cash and left. and the King Crab is obviously the money maker, but i do remember after the first season they were saying how the Fish&Game was changing how the system worked. that first season it was basically a free for all, and that is how it had been fir years, i guess. and once the quota is met it ends, the season might only of lasted 2 weeks, it basically was get as much as you can as fast as you can, but after that they changed the rules, now all the small boats are gone, and the fish&game gives quotas to all the regular big boats who consistently over the years have caught big numbers, now instead of a shitload of boats trying to all catch an X amount of crab in a short time, each boat is assigned a quota and can take as long as they want till they catch their share, or this is what i have gathered, and i think it is to reduce the fatalities, cause a lot of boats wee small and some only had 3 or 4 man crews. also IMO the opeileio(?) crab, the ones they catch after they king crab season, that is the worst weather, all the ice, just to catch crab that isn't worth half as much and they have to stay out longer. |

On all these shows like Deadliest Catch,Ice Road truckers and Chopper garage you get a supreme amount of A-holes that will fight at the drop of a hat.I think when these people get word that they are making a series about them, they take Macho 101 and Ass hole 101 classes.
I know alot of guys that moved to Alaska to fish and work the pipelines etc.and they brag about how much they make but most end up dead, divorced or broke. One guy jumped out of a hotel window with 50K in his pocket 2 days after the fishing season ended. These guys can make $1000 a day and they spend all of it in a bar or on 40 foot high 4 wheel drive Hemmy's and don't have a pot to piss in. I like Alaska as a state because it's the most libertarian, freedom and constitutional constructed mindset state but it's a rough place to live and there are alot of rough people living there. |

How many times can you watch a ball go through a hoop? Or a bat hit a ball?
I don't watch it for the crabs, I watch it for captain Phil flying off the handle and berating his son because he had the temerity to ask for full-share when he hadn't earned it. I watch it for captain Sig's sarcastic remarks while working his crew like a mule which leads to them bathmouthing him and flipping him off. I watch it for captain Jonathon plucking a deckhand who had fallen overboard out of the freezing waters seconds before he succumbs to hypothermia. I watch it for deckhand Matt worrying about making it back to the mainland in time so he doesn't go to jail for missing a court date. I watch it for a new greenhorn (an ex rodeo clown) who can't keep up and throws a fit and quits because he overhears someone say he pushes like a girl. In other words, I watch it for the human drama and the interesting interactions, which are often times volatile and confrontational. I could care less about the crab, they could be fishing for old shoes and I'd still watch. |

Saw a guy fracture his ankle, a camera man fell into a hole on the deck and broke three ribs, one guy fell off the boat and by the luck of God got rescued before hypothermia set in, and yes another boat sank with one survivor and three dead. These are just the ones we got to see on camera. One of the best shows on TV and I have all the respect in the world for these guys. I wouldn't last 8 hours on one of those boats in bad weather. It's the constant grind of setting bait, manuevering the heavy ass pots, throwing out and coiling the heavy ropes over and over and over and over, always being in a heightened state of stress that the ropes can rap around your legs or a 20 foot wave can wash you overboard, trying to keep your balance with the waves and iced over deck under your feet, all this with basically zero sleep for weeks and cold as a mutha****a... a few week grind like very few others. Another decent show if you like Deadliest Catch is Axe Men. |
