Betting American Idol: Is it bye bye Brooke?
By: Robyn & Bread | sbrforum.com With the aspiring performers just a half-dozen large, American Idol hit the stage last night and paid tribute to one of the stage's most acclaimed names in Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. Known for such Broadway greats as Cats and Phantom of the Opera, some of the performances were not so great to put it mildly. At the end of the evening, many had Brooke White down as the next to meet the AI axe. Musical Theatre week…on American Idol? The six remaining contestants performed the songs of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. For those who are unfamiliar with his work, he is a highly acclaimed musical theatre composer who wrote songs about destitute cats, disfigured phantoms and a dying feminist. Syesha Mercado – "One Rock 'n Roll Too Many" Bread: Syesha is looking more and more stunning as the weeks go on. That can only help her vote counts. America loves beautiful. This week, she resembles Josephine Baker, one of the country's first African-American Hollywood hotties. Bread likey. She may be in the bottom three again this week, but she has made a living down there. And she won't go anywhere once again this week. You can find odds for Syesha winning it all ranging from +3000 all the way up to +5000. So if you are liking her, make sure you shop around for value. A better wager may be for her to outlast Carly Smithson at +220. Very possible with her coming on strong as of late. And you never know when Carly's Lizard Man might freak out and eat her. Robyn: Being that Syesha has a pretty healthy musical theatre background, it was a given that this would be her week. And it was. After starting out draped across the grand piano, Syesha worked the stage…even finding a moment to snuggle with Beetlejuice on the guitar. At this point, things are looking good for Syesha to make it to the Final 4. Randy said that Syesha could be a huge star on Broadway. Paula, as usual, agreed with Randy. Simon said, “Uh, that was very sexy,” and thought that she showed a lot of personality. Jason Castro – "Memory" ![]() Bread: It was 4/20 two days ago and our favorite burnout, Castro, is definitely still flying with the kites tonight. You do know that's like a national holiday for him, riyeeght? Even Webber hinted at his aloofness, after saying the words "Glamour Puss" on national TV. Castro did a horrible job, and has a very good chance of going home. During Ryan's post-performance interview, Jason looked into the crowd and said in his best Jeff Spicoli voice, "I know that dude." Castro has lower odds than Syesha to win it all, but rest assured that this stoner has as much a chance of winning as he does finishing a coherent sentence. Robyn: I think the highlight of the show was when Jason discovered that a cat originally sang his song. He was so confused. It’s a safe bet to say that he lives in a world full of rainbows and unicorns. Jason was completely lost this week and will certainly be in the bottom two. Look for him to make his exit next week. Randy said that said that it was a vocal train wreck. Paula said something that lasted a minute but didn’t make much sense. Simon said that it came over as a young guy being forced to sing a song at a wedding that he didn’t want to sing. Brooke White – "You Must Love Me" ![]() Bread: I was waiting for tonight to happen and I giggled like a school girl at a Justin Timberlake concert when it did. Brooke started off by embarking on a transparent testimonial about her time with Webber, and how he "looked into her eyes." I have a theory about people who use that term. They are fictional story tellers and not to be trusted. How fitting that my least favorite finalist decided to use those very words. In case you couldn't tell, I'm not very fond of Brooke. Then she began to sing, and I completely forgot her words 10 seconds in. I applauded. Loudly. Then she got going again and was dreadful. At this point, I am feeling super duper about my wager of Smithson lasting longer than her. If I lose this one, I'm writing my congressman to begin an investigation. Robyn: Not only did Brook start the song, stop, apologize and then start over…she sang the song exactly like Madonna. And that’s not a compliment. The entire song was uncomfortable to watch. Brooke has absolutely no idea what to do with her body when she isn’t behind a piano. She is definitely gone this week. The rest of the contestants can breathe a sigh of relief. Bread picked wisely with Carly outlasting Brooke. Randy *laughing* said, “For me, it wasn’t great.” Paula sat in silence for five seconds and then scolded Brooke for stopping and then starting over. Simon said that Brooke will be disappointed when she watches her performance. David Archuleta – "Think of Me" Bread: Webber stressed to Archuleta to try to keep his eyes open when he sings. He should've given the same advice to the viewers. BOOOORRRRRINGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!! The boy wonder is still a favorite to win it all. You can find odds from +100 to -135. I still think he will lose out in the finals. But I've been wrong before. Damn Dodgers. Robyn: First of all, I want to thank my friend Manny for his awesome picture of David as the cymbal monkey. ![]() This was a pretty rough theme for me because I really can’t stand ALW’s music. David did an interesting arrangement of ‘Think of Me’ from Phantom of the Opera. He went a little overboard with the vocal runs and forgot a few words, but overall, he did a decent job. I am still amazed every week with his tone and amazing pitch. Once again, he is Top 2 material but alas, people will grow bored of his consistency. Randy said that David is the bomb and the one to beat! Paula thought he was absolutely perfect. Simon said that the performance was pleasant but one of his weakest performances to date. Carly Smithson – "Jesus Christ Superstar" Bread: Webber just got done telling Archuleta, "I think, the eyes have it," and now he tells Smithson, "When the Irish eyes have it." He's sticking with what got him here. Despite the fact that Carly's paisley dress looked like her husband's disfigured face, she did a great job. Once again, you can catch her to win it all at +1600, +1800, all the way up to +3250, so keep your eyes open. Robyn: Hey, we had another special guest in the orchestra this week. Stephen King on trumpet. Neat! Great performance by Carly this week. She messed up a few of the lyrics, but unlike Brooke, she is a true professional and was able to get right back on track. I am wondering when her voice is going to give out on her. I just don’t understand how someone can continue singing with that kind of power week after week without showing signs of vocal fatigue. Randy said that it wasn’t her best performance, but it was definitely good. And he liked her outfit. Paula said, “I loved so much that it was so unexpected.” WHAT??? Simon thought she was shouting a little bit in the middle of the song, but it was one of his favorite performances of the night. David Cook – "Music of the Night" Bread: Right before David's performance, I saw a commercial for my local Fox news entertainment reporter, Charley Belcher. They look a lot alike. What I'm trying to say is that these are the kinds of things you think of when you have nothing to worry about. Cook does a stellar job, and makes me feel very comfortable with my ongoing wagers for him to win it all. Won't you join me? It will be OK. His odds go down everyday so hurry up! Robyn: Sporting a freshly unshaven but trimmed beard, I think David was going for the Hugh Jackman look this week. Apparently David grew up doing musical theatre, which is alright, but I just couldn’t get into his performance this week. It’s hard for me to hear him go from “cool rocker guy” to Colm Wilkinson in one week’s time. It was nice to see that David isn’t a one trick pony, but during a competition such as American Idol, you want to stick to your bread and butter. If he goes back to doing what he does best, he will soar into the final two and win it all. Randy said once again that David was “hot molten hot lava!” Paula said that he is a well rounded performer and it was a beautiful performance. Simon mentioned that it isn’t the side of David he likes, but he made the best of what was given. Robyn’s Bottom Three: • Carly • Brooke • David Archuleta - I am going to keep placing him in the bottom three until it happens Bread’s Bottom Three: • Jason • Brooke • Syesha |

After watching the youtube performances earlier today, I can't say there was anything much to be impressed with. I thought that from worst to best performance my rating would be: Jason, Syesha, Brooke, David A., Carly, David C.
A lot of confusion in the "to be eliminated tonight" wagering today. I put some bids out in the exchanges earlier today and was pleasently surprised at what low odds people were willing to pay, i.e. +200 for Syesha, +200 for Jason, +200 for Carly and +150 for Brooke. If you add that up, that means for every $140 I took in, I'll have to pay out $100 to the backer of the correct eliminated person, and keep $40 for myself, no risk invloved. Unless David A. or David C. get eliminated, in which case everything stays in my account (if they gotta go, why not tonight!?). Any one of those 4 has good reason to leave tonight. Jason (currently around +350 to be eliminated tonight, now that the market has settled) was just totally off last night. Syesha (+500 to leave) looked great and showed some life on stage for a change, but she has been in the bottom 3 a lot and after two weeks of surprise eliminations she can't be feeling that safe. Carly (+200 to leave) is at the bottom of dialidol, but I thought she did a good job and she's been at the bottom before, and Brooke (+150 to leave) her performance was so-so, neglecting the song re-start, but she is the new poster child of VFTW so that may help her a bit. Very very tough to call on the elimination tonight, can't say there's much value in any of them, maybe with Syesha if you can get +600 or better, IMHO. Nice job again you guys. |

Robyn, I commented already on your article, but I'll say something here too, because you my pet are the love e-child of me and (you know who)...God, I'm skeered to mention names, cause ya never know who will peepee on it. good job my friends!"The six remaining contestants performed the songs of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. Ah, nice of you to say Robyn, but you know, you guys watch the show for the beauty, the pageantry, the chiuauas, maybe something to make light of here and there. I on the other hand, am watching things stritctly from the view point of the grim reaper...who will get the axe this week. Anyway, the elimination market only has maybe a week or two of life left in it, once it gets down to 3 or 4 finalists it should be pretty stable and uninteresting. Perhaps for season 8.....? ![]() |

Ohhh no no no no no. You no understand. Bread is only watching this show because of the article. He told me before the season started (before we were asked to write the article) that he would NOT be watching this season with me. I, on the other hand, am a singer and therefore have a little more knowledge as to the musical aspect of the show. But don't get me wrong, I am always looking for the train wreck each week. Aren't we all? |

They need to reverse a lot of these types of shows and have the judges perform as the contestants with 'losers' from past shows serving as judges. I'd love to see that twit Simon get his comeuppance and be ridiculed simply for a song selection.

I love Brooke White and would be sad to her go. I think Jason & Brooke will be in the bottom two. I'm getting so sick and tired of David Archuleta. He continually picks songs I have never heard of and all of his performances sound the same to me.

Not only do I get the Beetlejuice reference, it's now the highlight of American Idol for me. Thanks for the pic. I'm not sure but I think I would've paid hundreds to sit in the first row of a Beetlejuice solo acoustic show.

http://www.tmz.com/2008/03/19/jeff-a...dad-from-hell/ P.S. I also like Brooke, though in more of a "singer-songwriter" not "singer" kind of way. She desperately NEEDS that piano. As of now, my absolute least favorites are Carly (I told my wife last night that she may be the only woman I've ever fantasized about punching), Secada/Archuleta (still due for puberty any week now), and Castro (I'm a pretty laid back guy who has smoked his share of fine buds, but never did I act like a complete douchewank about it. Idiots like him are the poster children for the "This is your brain on drugs" people and certainly don't further the cause for future legalization (and heavy taxation) of a fairly harmless plant. |

How is it possible that Jason Castro didn't pick MAGICAL MR. MISTOFELEES?

Geez, it's about time for Jason Castro, isn't it? I'm very surprised he's hung on this long. While I don't think Brooke is good enough to finish top 4, I enjoy some of the thinks she's done, I hope she stays this week.

Carly's main problem was that she seemed so angry while singing (oh, and that she already had a prior record deal worth approx $2M and really didn't embody the AI spirit). She seems like she had a really nice personality, but she actually is probably relieved to go home. Now she can resume eating and kick that binge/purge diet. Have a few pints of Guinness and enjoy, ya' know?

Fortunately, it's almost over. It's part of the husband-wife Collective Bargaining Agreement in my household. In exchange for American Idol, Beauty and the Geek and Rock of Love, I get unlimited sports. The easy thing about AI is that if you tivo it, you can FF through the 46 minutes of nothingness and just get the nutmeat. No show has mastered the art of "filler" like American Idol (apologies to Deal or No Deal).

Well, I thought Daisy looked like a stripper that had just taken one Rohypnol too many. Her face moved in weird ways and she was remarkably dumb. Not cutesy dumb, just dumb. Ambre was most certainly trying to further her career so I found it humorous that he picked her (after last year's debacle with that pink-haired girl). I also found it EXTREMELY funny that Bret tagged Ambre one night, then Daisy the next, then decided he wanted to be with Ambre. And perhaps most humorous is the fact that Bret Michaels still considers himself a rock star. I read an article about him being a prima donna at some old-school glam-rock festival in Oklahoma. I want to say it was a Rolling Stone article but just imagining Bret pouting while trying to figure out a new way to construct a song using only 3 chords just kills me.
