Default Chiefs Deal Allen to Vikings

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=090...o&confirm=true

The Kansas Chiefs have agreed to trade Pro Bowl defensive end Jared Allen to the Minnseota Vikings, reports NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

The Chiefs will receive Minnesota's first- (17th overall) and both of its third-round picks (73rd and 82nd) as compensation. Kansas City has been looking to acquire additional draft picks in an attempt to speed up coach Herm Edwards' rebuilding project for a team that lost its last nine games in 2007 and finished 4-12.

The Vikings also agreed on a new contract with Allen, which will be finalized Wednesday. Allen flew to Minnesota on Tuesday night in anticipation of Wednesday's events.

The Vikings fill one of their biggest needs by adding Allen to their front four. The Pro Bowl starter had a league-leading 15.5 sacks in 2007 along with 67 tackles, three forced fumbles and 18 pressures in only 14 games.

The Chiefs need offensive linemen and defensive backs, two position groups that scouts believe to be in abundance. The Chiefs already owned the No. 5 overall pick in the draft, and now have 13 selections with the trade, including five of the first 82 picks.

Before trading the 26-year-old Allen to the Vikings, the Chiefs also talked with Tampa Bay about Allen.

General manager Carl Peterson's relationship with Allen has been strained ever since Peterson, in the wake of Allen's DUI convictions, described him as "a young man at risk." Allen, who could be suspended for a season if he has another alcohol-related episode, had said he would not negotiate with Kansas City if he didn't get a contract done by next July.

After reaching an impasse, the Chiefs made Allen their franchise player on Feb. 7, but did not put the exclusive tag on him, as they did on tight end Tony Gonzalez when he was franchised in 2002.

That made it possible for Allen and his agent to talk with other clubs and be examined by their team doctors.

Allen was suspended the first two games by the commissioner last season for multiple DUI convictions. But Allen says he has stopped drinking entirely, a claim backed up by close friends.

"I've seen Jared at a big party, out on the dance floor, where everybody is drinking except one person. It's Jared, and he's having the best time of everybody," said Chiefs fullback Boomer Grigsby.

In his first game back from the suspension against the Vikings, he had nine tackles, two sacks, a pressure and a pass defended. He also forced Adrian Peterson to fumble.

The 6-foot-6, 270-pound Allen was drafted with a supplemental fourth-round pick out of Idaho State in 2004.

    love the trade.

Allen will run wild while the Williams boys get double teamed.

great move. Vikings needed that position filled, now they have a young quality starter. Better than risking drafting it. I'm just sad they had to give up 2 3rds. Now they only have a 2nd round pick...they won't be that active in the draft now.

seems like a lot of value went each way. the vikes will have the best dline in football. now they need a real qb.

If the Vkkings can somehow obtain a QB they will easily win the NFC Central.

    Best rush attack
    Best rush D
    Great O Line
    Great D Line
Still need a WR to compliment Berrian.

Do you think they need a real qb or do you think it's the WR's that aren't doing their part. I didn't watch that many Minny games so I don't know who is at fault here.

Well, it seems like our options at QB just got more limited. It is looking like another year with Jackson. I watched every Vikings game he's played and sometimes he has looked amazing. He's a better player than what he has shown in his worser moments. I'm still not sure if the guy is NFL starter material, but it seems we will probably find out this season. That said, he really hasn't had the best WR's. With Berrian, the Vikings easily have the best WR's since TJack has been there, the best corp since Moss left. My only concern is the window of opportunity closing if we did waste our time trying to develop this young QB. Some of the players are definitely getting older. You are right **, put McNabb on the Vikings last year and they probably do well. They played pretty well all year if you ask me, minus the end of the season. Washington game comes to mind.

if Jackson plays like he did at the end of the season the vikings are playoff bound. Maybe a wildcard at worst. GB is very good and so is Chicago the division is always tough. Detroit still sucks though.

    Vikings
    GB (uncertain about rodgers)
    Bears (qb play nonexistant)
detroit (matt milan is still GM)

awful trade for the chiefs...you get rid of your only player who shows up every weekend on defense for a 17th pick in the draft...and they arent even guaranteed to pull long/dorsey w/ their 5th pick at all...

    the vikings are loving life!

I agree. I expect Jackson to have a breakout year this year. Year one, he had rookie tatooed on his forehead, he was lost out there, even in an abbreviated offense. Year two, similar story, but steady improvement. He should be solid after a couple knockaround years under his belt, not to mention an awesome o-line and running game. A lot will hinge on the WR talent they are giving him to work with. Otherwise, he's in a a dream situation from a QB situation.

In the division, anything can happen. But, the Lions are still too far away, the Bears still have too many questions on offense. The Packers would be the runaway favorite, except that Favre isn't there, so there are definite questions there. It wouldn't suprise me at all if Vikings took the division in 2008.

Just imagine an opposing QB's face when he lines up against Allen, Williams, and Williams.

They already double the Williams boys.

Allen will have a field year.

How can you NOT make this deal if you are Minny!

One proven pass rusher for a later 1st round pick you were gonna use on a pass rusher anyway.

Yea, you lose some 3rd round picks. But its a crap shoot there.

Well, the Vikings have been finally drafting well since Childress signed on. Last year was the first draft that I felt good about in a long time. I was looking forward to another good draft, but I guess you do have to take Allen. Adding him to Williams Bros creates exponential improvement on the line. Pat isn't exactly a pass rusher, but he is the best run stopping DL in the league. Anyway, that first pick could have been used to get Brohm, but it now seems certain TJ is gettign another year. Vikings definitely need to address TE. Maybe they would still do that with 2nd round, or a DB.

By "end of the season" you must mean 4th quarter against Denver...because he had a pretty awful end to his season.

GB is a good team, but I totally disagree with Chicago. They're in shambles. Perhaps they'll disappear for another decade. I wouldn't want to stay in Chicago if I were there. They'll probably have the worst WRs this year. No QB, no WR, and the wrong Adrian Peterson. Chicago is toast.

Chicago isn't as bad off as people think. This is still the NFL. any back up is still a baller by some means. There defense isn't the problem its the running game starting with the O-line. If they draft OT and OG (guards are found 2nd to 3rd round pretty often) They can then move the sucky guy at LT last year to RT where he dominated the year before. This should improve the Oline Immensly. C is not weak for them so you have a guard who might be just barley average with some rookies on the Line. Its not ideal but you can work with that. Also add the fact that they are more than likely to sign alexander to a short term running back deal to give some competition to benson.

This makes taking a 2nd round QB possible for them. Although I believe the bears will avoid drafting a QB this year... If they haven't drafted one in the 2nd round that is... Keep in mind they are looking to add a DT. So it wouldn't suprise me to see them take a risk on some of th riskier DT out there. Like the guy who was on E60 who has/had depression or some other thing that has caused there draft stock to fall. Finding a DT is pretty easy fill in the 5th round if your willing to take a flier on someone...

Also, Jackson did not have a great year, but you saw him turn the corner. Its there its in him. Can he put it together though? Thats the question now that he has some talent around him.

Your talking about 224 people being drafted. 5th round players are still legendary college football players in most cases. Its just can they translate that to the NFL.

Jackson is a better player than he has shown in some of his games, but he has also shown his potential. If he doesn't improve quickly enough, though, the NFL will go on without him. He has really good accuracy and strength, but some of his passes in games are awful. It's all mental for him. It's unfortunate he wasn't in a better college program.

As far as the Bears, they are really lacking in those 3 skill positions...QB, RB, WR. It's really tough to have a competitive team when you're missing those. And right here, right now, I will say that the Bears trip to the superbowl was a huge streak of good luck and intangibles. I do see this team falling apart still. But it is the NFL, and anything can happen.
