I forgot about Phil Jackson because I hate the NBA. My new rankings will be posted below. I think Lombardi did alot more with the Packers than Walsh did for San Fran (Montana & Rice > Starr), Cox is a consistently good coach but he had alot of top teams that just didn't win the big game. I would even put Torre ahead of him and I don't even consider him a top 5 coach in bases. Don't follow hockey enough but I've heard of Bowman. Wooden is the obvious in College Baskets but I think Summit belongs in the same sentence these days.

    My new top 5:

    Lombardi
    Wooden
    Summit
Paterno & Bowden (this is technically a tie in my book)
Jackson (sorry but when you have Michael Jordan & Scotty Pippen not all of your victories are because of your coach...just look at the Lakers for proof.)

I love it that some of you pick a woman, but don't you have to be coaching a sport to be included on this list? Women's basketball a sport? Might as well include the head cheerleading coach at UCLA as well.

As an ND fan I think that Knute was a great coach, however, considering all of the players ND had then and the limit of competition back then I can't put him in my top 5. Definitely the best of the ND coaches though.

I'll throw a name out there, Eddie Robinson, who coached Grambling State. Some of you may not know him, but google him and check him out.

Who put Phil Jackson on their list? Lol. C'mon. The guy hasen't won anything unless he has the best players in the game. Thats why the Lakers havent done anything the last 4 years. Now they have Kobe/Gasol/Odom, he might win a playoff series....yeah, great coach, LOL.

because you know how good the Vols tradition is, so why would a smart man like yourself be surprised?

Phil Jackson turned around two teams (one team TWICE)
    Parcells turned around four teams
    Knight turned around two teams
    Landry consistant for decades
Riley appeared in the NBA finals with three differant teams in three differant decades

    outside looking in... Tressel

There's no way you can have just a top 5 but these guys must get mentioned with them:
B Bowden-nobody had the string FSU had in the 90s to this decade
    Joe Pa-consistency for decades
Tom Osbourne-had dominating teams for decades, beat the piss out of people before he retired
Jimmy Johnson-won it all at both levels

Its nice that he won those titles with some of the most talented teams ever, but hes not one of the best 5 football coaches of all time, much less being one of the top overall coaches for any sport.

where do you rank barry switzer, 2nd?

So you are saying he had nothing to do with getting the talent there in the first place? Interesting. I always thought it was part of the job to get that talent. I put him there because he is one of the best talent evaluaters ever and that is part of the job. Switzer won with Johnson's talent so no, I would not put him on the list. I could argue for or against anyone on these lists. Phil Jackson had the best players in the league when he won so did John Wooden. It was Johnson that chose to take Troy Aikman when everyone else wanted Tony Mandarich.

Swede, no matter what people feel about him, he is one of the greatest of all time. I met him and Nick Saban 2 weeks ago. I'll send you a pic tommorrow. The guy was totally different than what the media presents.
