Thumbs down Philly fans have absolutely no class

    AOL News

Just in case you didn't believe us about Phillies/Mets being one of baseball's hot new rivalries, consider what happened on Friday night when Phillies fans affirmed the stereotype of the "bad fan". Philly faithful cheered Jose Reyes' apparent injury when his head went into Chase Utley's knee on a slide ... only to boo when Reyes shook it off. Billy Wagner, who played in Philly once upon a time and is never afraid of having an opinion, of course had one when it came to this:

"It's really sad when humanity comes to the point where somebody getting hurt, it's fun to watch," Wagner said. "It's sad when that happens. Nobody wants anybody to get hurt. I don't want Jimmy Rollins getting hurt. I don't want Pat Burrell to get hurt. I don't want none of these guys. I want to compete against these guys because they're the best, and you want to beat the best. You don't want excuses. When you see Reyes laying there - it's a tough shot, a clean play - and the fans cheering that he's hurt, that just goes and shows you volumes about where our society is headed."

Asked if fan behavior in baseball had worsened since his career began with Houston in 1995, Wagner added: "Not really, because this is about the only place I've ever seen somebody get cheered when they get hurt. (Shoot), they boo Santa Claus. What's it tell you? They've taken it to a whole new level when you're cheering for somebody to be hurt."

Well, it's not exactly a "whole new" level. Remember Billy, Eagles fans cheered when Michael Irvin lay motionless on the field and was carried off and immobilized, so it's nothing new. Wagner does have a point, but fret not, Philly fans ... Wagner hasn't been too crazy about Mets fans either this season.

This has been known for years. Philly sports fans who are from Philly are generally scumbags (and some Philly fans who live outside of Philly too). Not saying that they are the only ones but I really can't think of a set of fans who hate the opposition so much that they applaud paralysis.

    Agree.

The nicest fans I can think of are probably in Green Bay. I've vacationed there with buddies that were Bears fans, and nobody is rude to you, hell people buy each other drinks at a bar with all the gear on like it's nothing. In NY people are drunk douche bags and pick on people wearing for instance Patriots gear.

I think it depends on what part of NY you are in. I could definitely see that if you are in the upper part of Manhattan, the Bronx, or Brooklyn. However, in the village (Southern part of Manhattan) people are alot more lax. I generally can't stand people who are out of their mind drunks to begin with. When they think they are the shit that just makes it 100 times worse to deal with.

So Wags hates NASCAR also? Because the only people who cheer for that are there for the wrecks.

While I'm not much of a NASCAR fan the people I know are actually there to see one of their guys win the race. If they don't like someone they hope for at most a minor crash. Things have changed alot since Earnhart Sr. died on the track.

Imo this is not something new...look at any eagles fan...they were always the worst in the NFL...players feared going to vetrens stadium...on one hand I dont like the cheering...but Ill put it like this...Im a yankees fan...if Becket got hurt during the season, I wouldnt be crying.

This has been known for a long time though, philly has always had a hardcore crowd, with people who were just the scum of the earth, but thats how it is. If you wear a different team jersey, expect to be verbally abused if not in multiple fights. I don't mind philly fans being very loud and crazy, since it makes it tougher for visiting teams, i do however think cheering for someone who got hurt is a complete disgrace.

What has been known for a long time is the lazy press has built an empire on the Philly fans are nuts bullcrap and you dopes buy into it 100 percent. Bill Buckner was storched in Boston for 20 years but nothing is said and it was a game six that he made a mistake in. Mitch Williams gives up a game deciding walk off homer in a game 7 in the world series and he works for the sports radio station in Philly and all has been forgiven for years. There are a handful of bad fans everywhere but when it happens in Philly it is easy to blow it way out of proportion because lazy people will buy right into it. Kinda like Bush supporters.
