One of the guys on my new hockey team, was telling me that he was gonna volunteer to coach inner-city youths in ice hockey. The program is called Ice Hockey In Harlem. I am considering to become involved. It seems like a good cause...


Does anyone else have any stories about Volunteering? What are the pros and cons of doing something like this?

I'd do that for sure. Always wanted to coach. My old man coached for a bit but told me to wait until I have kids to do it because I would enjoy it much more.

Ya same here. I have been thinking about coaching the past few years. This might be a good way to get my foot in the door, and maybe find an actual coaching job afterwards...

I know a few there blitty that does this. I think it makes them feel good to give to the community.

pros - feel good about helping others
cons - all it takes is one bad kid or bad parent to really ruin it

i used to deliver groceries to poor people in milwaukee back in the early 90s

there were more than a couple times that i feared for my life, people used to answer the door with a knife or gun in your face even when you were giving them free food and they knew you were coming

early 90s were much tougher than now though, gangs and violence in general were much worse then

we have to do 40 hrs of volunteer work to graduate highschool here, Overall it is a good experience, especially with coaching sports since there is still a bit of competition involved so you still want to win, cons are annoying kids and parents but you learn to block them out

Ya, I had to do the same type of mandatory community serve. It usually involved office work or cleaning up litter. I did not enjoy doing that stuff.

i volunteer all the time..

I took this 15 year old kid school shopping the other day.. Santa Clara has a good community outreach program.. we woke up early one saturday morning and took them shopping.. JCpenny gave us 25% off everything store wide.. and on top of that a 150$ giftcard..

This kid was so fing happy man.. i got him jeans.. two pairs of skate shoes(he is a skater) so some vans, some dope Nike SB.. a bunch of shirts.. I got him a Huge thing of socks...

He is set for the year and he will be rocking.. his dad has fallen on hard times.. and it felt great to help this kid out.. he is a good looking boy so hopefully his new school clothes will help him pull some ass this year, as he told me he didn't have a girlfriend...

a week later i got a hand written note from the kid .. telling me how i made his summer... He didn't realize that the note he sent me.. actually made my summer =)

A good place to start volunteering would be to find out what happened at the Iowa state fair last week where lots of local salt of the earth fair attenders minding their own business were attacked by gang members for the fun of it.It never got reported in the media outside of Des Moines and the bangers even recorded it all.I think people have to volunteer information like this to the slanted liberal national media,Obama,lib college professors in academia,community activist groups like Al Sharpton's and Jesse Jackson's.

Yes, you get a "feel good feeling" at first, but then realize it's a huge waste of time..food shelter where people wouldn't even thank you and 75% couldn't speak English.

If you're coaching, I would say that would be much more enjoyable and worth it for you than say working at a food shelter.

Only self-righteous pricks with their head up their ass do work for free to "help others".

Do it dude, it won't even feel like volunteer work coaching the kids and I'll bet in the end, you get just as much if not more enjoyment out of it then they do. I coach high school now, but use to help out with youth hockey and had a good time doing it. A few years back did H4H, not nearly as fun as coaching, but you still felt good about doing it.

I coached youth basketball at the YMCA. I enjoyed doing it but sometimes you just got that one kid and/or parent that made you wonder why you volunteered to do this in the first place.

Don't have any problem with volunteering my services, but Harlem? Isn't it a little dangerous around them parts? Besides, most of the equipment you are hauling a furnishing could get stolen.

This is one hell of a good read. Nothing like doing a good thing for others especially when they are appreciative back.

I tutored 1st and 2nd grade kids who tested poorly to help them improve their reading skills. It was called the Werlin program.

Most of the kids were poor, no father, or multiple fathers, and some of them had other problems such as hypertension, etc.

I taught two kids a day for about an hour each for about 10 weeks. I taught a total of four different kids, because two of them abruptly moved away. The school was in a bad area, gangs and poverty, but after a while you could see they really liked the personal help. Some of them were very quiet and shy, and a few of them were more aggressive.

At the end of each session, just out of curiosity, I would ask them very simple math questions, like what is one finger + one finger or two pencils plus two pencils. My questions got progressively harder, and I would write them down on a small white board. I wanted to see where they were at mathematically. Three of the kids always had to use their fingers to count, but there was one exception.

One day I was doing this exercise with a second grade boy from Jamica, working my way to harder and harder questions, when I asked him, "what is 37+45?" He said, "Aw, mon that's too hard!" I told him to think about it and at least try. He said, "OK, wait a minute, wait a minute"--you could see his mind working. I was looking at something else when he blurted out "82!" I said, "Huh?" Then I did the math, and he was right. I did more and more problems with him, and he always got them right--by doing them in his head.

It turned out he was a mini math prodigy. He went from last in his class to first.

This kid's previous tutor and just played Go Fish with the kid, because that's all the kid wanted to do. That's all he wanted to do with me, but I just told him, "OK, but first let's read two pages of this book. I always put him off, and stuck to the lesson plan. Then after a couple of weeks I started in on the math.

Without one on one help who knows what this kid would be doing. They don't get any help at home.

It was fun tutoring those kids.

I have donated my time, and occasionally my money, to several causes. I have donated some of my professional time (business consultant) to some causes as well, and even a few presidential campaigns.

We need more volunteering.

i volunteered for an organization called TAPS, or Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, which helped families of deceased servicemen and women through the grief process and funeral arrangements.

It was very rewarding, and they let volunteers develop their own schedules and projects they wish to help out with.

volunteer work is something everyone should do if they have the time, it definitely helped improve my mood.

I have gone on some mission trips to fix up houses. One in Washington DC, one in Pittsburgh, and I went to New Orleans after Katrina. It was grueling work but I went with a couple of my very good friends to make it enjoyable.

I also volunteer every Monday when I'm done with school. I go to an elementary school and tutor/help the kids learn to read.

Also training to get on a volunteer fire dept. right now
