People play the lotto all the time; they enter contests/sweepstakes. They go to fairs/carnivals and place the little games to try to win some prize, etc.

i hated that crap in school/college...always told a different story. first introductions during freshman orientation i said i was from maui hawaii and my dad was an astronaut.

when we had to fill out our roommate survey, i said my proudest achievement was my collection of barbie dolls. not a bright move in hindsight, one of my suitemates wanted to be a boy band singer (and would practice).

Perception is still that "gamblers" have a problem, I thought with the explosion of poker it would become more acceptable, i guess we are not there yet. Family members still ask "so you still gamble?" as if I'm putting a needle in my veins or killing babies.

Distance yourself from it and look at it from the outside.

For most people in society, they see gambling at best as a recreational activity, at worst a vice that ruins lives. If it were more accepted, people wouldn't be driving 200 miles to get on a riverboat to play blackjack.

So to them, you said you were a hockey player and a smoker, or drinker, or enjoyed your weed. Either way, the majority see gambling as a vice, and it probably struck them as odd that you'd describe yourself using a vice.

I graduated a while ago. I speak from experience. Introductions are done to get over the awkwardness of meeting new people in a new setting. Known as an "ice breaker". Never seen it happen after the first year because usually classes get a bit more serious than the 101s.

I guess they do it different in Michigan, but it sounds pretty childish to me. Did they ask you your favourite colour, too?
